hi , im no mechanic but id be looking more towards your brake disc's or wheel balance/damaged. unless you've hit somthing or kerb then wont be steering rack, that would be more knocking when turning. i think.

hope this might help.

i agree with above!!!! when my seering rack was buggerd when the car was in the air you could wobble the wheel about lol

cheers f40.didnt think about the discs been warped but wouldnt it kick when braking even worse? plus i think they where changed by the previous owner as they look pretty new.gingerman >did you change your steering rack or did some one do it for ya? the steering wheel on mine has the knackard ball joint feel to it.

hi dave, 1st of if u aven't done already get ur wheel's checked 4 balance, if there ok, check the bak of the wheel 2 make sure there nice & clean? if they r next check that the wheel fit's correctly & that u dont need a spigot spacer, if the wheel's dont fit dead centre in the middle the hub that will corse imbalance & no matter how many time's u check the wheel balance u wont stop the wobble if this is the corse, as i'v ad this on my bemmer b4, u'l know this if the wheel feel's sloppy on the hub wiv no bolt's fitted but held flat 2 the hub.

ur ryt if it is brake imbalance or warped disc it would do it more wen u apply the brake, if it has ad new new disc's also check behind the disc 4 build up of rust on the hub cause that can corse an imbalance 2, but it doesn't sound like the rack 2 me either.

hope this help's regards mark

cheers mark. i aint had the wheels balanced yet as i thought it was sumit worn out........eg trackrod ends ball joints ect ect.as for the spiggot ring issue ive got turbo wheels on so its not that  although i know about the wheel wobble thing as my old cabby had wolf race wheels on that wernt right for the car........ was like that when i bought it. :smile:discs n pads where replaced not long before i bought the car so thats off the knackard list lol.when the car is stood still n you wobble the steering wheel there is play on the steering wheel that feels like i knackard ball joint or trackrod end. wondering if the track rod on the inner end is at fault? if so its a steering rack removal jobbie aint it? aint looking forward to doing that if it is.

hi dave

if it is the rack, on these older cars there not 2 bad 2 do! if it has got play wen standin still, then u can do a quick check, wen u put the new trackrod ends on i take it u got it tracked up, 2 save havin 2 re'do the trackin again, take off the nut's that hold on the rod end 2 the hub, but do not use a ball joint splitter!!! as these split the rubbers of the ball joint.

use a gd heavy duty hammer & b'in careful not 2 hit the ball joint or the thread of the ball joint, strike the rounded part of the hub were the ball joint go thro about 2 or 3 time's but not 2 hard & the shock will pop the joint out of th e hub, if the joints r gd they will b really stiff, the track rod ends should b hard 2 move & the arms that go in2 the rack if there gd should support them self's & not drop, (these r useually called drum stick's or steerin rack tie rods) if these r ok then the bushes in the rack r prob worn out which will give up & down movement.

the drum stick's can b replaced easily.

if u need 2 replace the rack do the same 2 get the track rod ends out of the hubs & take off the steerin coloum cover, undo 2 13mm nuts that hold the coloum 2 the bracket & 2 13mm bolts up underneath the bulkhead & the 13mm nut & bolt that hold the coloum 2 the rack via the clamp & slide it off the rack, but u dont need 2 take the coloum ryt out!

4 the rack there r 4 13mm bolt's wiv lockin tab's that hold the rack 2 the bulkhead undo these & just slide the rack straight out left or right, so not 2 bad!!!!

hope this get's ya sorted m8
