hi chris, if u want 2 find out if its the barrel or ignition switch, take off the plastic cover frm the bottum alf of the steerin column, on the left side of the ignition barrel on the under side u'l find 2 small flat head screew's, these r pinch screew's that hold the ignition switch 2 the barrel, only half unscreew these & slide of the switch, use a larger flat head screew driver & try 2 turn on & off the switch, if this work's u'll know if it's the barrel or switch & know wat's worn, if it's the switch then there's a multy plug about 3-4 inch's further down frm the switch, so u can just replace the switch if u can get 1, if it's the barrel get bak 2 me as i ave a mk4 that i dont need wiv key. hope this help's

Hi, had the same problem a while ago; if not the ignirion as described above; I found the problem to be my battery and a faulty battery charger. Borrowd a friends battery charger, diconnected the battery, left it charging over night and all worked fine the next day.

hi, thanks... i have already tried this and replaced the wire/plug on back of barrel as person who owned car before me thought insulation tape was the best thing since sliced bread... i have noticed that the fuel pump seems to be constantly on when the key is turned on.. again the person who owned car said they had replaced this but after seein the mess they have made of other things im not so sure... does the key ignition work on the same relay as the fuel pump??? yes i can withdraw the key with it running.. the only way to stop it is stalling it. i have recharged the battery on a new charger so its not that. thanks tho

thanks

hi chris, sounds like the barrel is not doin the job it should then, does the engine turn off if u take the plastic switch off the bak of the metal barrel then?

but not disconnecting the multy plug!

Hi, take the suround off from around the steering wheel, you will see the multi plug connected to the back of the ignition barrel; it has all the wires for the ignition connected to it. Once removed you can use your key to try turning the engine off and on; it dosn't have to be your key, I just found this easy to use.
