96 Cabbie Doesnt Like Changing Gear

Hi guys,

The wife has been moaning now for some time that when she changes into gear if feels incredibly hard to slot in, sometimes impossible. When selecting reverse theres a feeling of the car being "hit" by something and a clunk noise.

When I took the car out, it seemed absolutely fine when driven normally, but when I tried to change gears quickly (off slip roads gaining speed onto main A/M's), it did seem to have resistance but when I popped back to neutral and slowly changed, it was fine. Is this a clutch issue or gearbox?

It's tempting to put my complete '94 engine into hers and upgrade to an RS for mine, but thats a lot of effort if it's something that can be fixed cheap and quick.

Cheers

Savage

Took it down to "Mr Clutch" in Portsmouth for them to check it out. Didn't understand a lot of what he said, but seems a summary is:

clutch shot, the oil seal on gearbox has gone which has coated the clutch in oil which in turn means flywheel slipping and creating hotspots. Pretty sure he said something about bearings but not 100%.

Took to my local garage who were quopting obscene amounts plus VAT, back to Mr Clutch and in theory, 2 days time and £444.93 lighter, the wife gets her car back.

Thanks for your advice guys.

Chris.
