Guest Rustler
Hey Guys..can U give me a bit of "Advice" on tensioning "THE BELT" on my '92 130bhp RQB 1.8 Zetec....!!! Just replaced the timing belt ,tensioner pulley, spring, post, both idlers along with new water pump. All now 100% spot on....BUT...Do I need to tension the belt MORE than the spring tension does,..or..just tighten up the tension pulley at the point the spring holds it when the pulley is loose? I have turned the engine over by hand 1/2 doz times to ensure the belt is settled in ok.. Your advice/comments appreciated.. Thanks ..Rustler .......The Oldest Cabbier.. ianxr3i
I have done a lot of these timing belts & I have always let the tensioner take the slack on the belt. As long as you have got the marker on the tensioner in the right place there shouldn't be a problem
Guest Rustler
Hi Ian... Thanks M8 ,I get your drift, but do'nt know about "The Marker On The Tensioner" bit........had a very close look at my tensioner pulley but can't make out any MARKER,..just the bolt elongated slot for tensioning and the ALLEN key hole to enable U to move the pulley left /right.??? Guest s6boy1979
I think what he means is when you turn it over by hand and the timing markings stayed lined up then it's cool. You should only be able to twist the belt 90 degrees
Paul Grainger
The spring should always be used when setting the tension. The tensioning should be done by allowing the spring to hold pressure on the tensioner whilst you turn the crank slightly clockwise to take up any slack around the belt. then recheck the timing after rotating it twice. When the Zetec first came out this spring did not exist. it was a modification to make sure the belts were being tensioned properly because if not the customer would complain of a noise described by Ford as a 'goose honk'. Beware the goose!!!
