Mk6 With Steering Problem Can You Help???

Recommended Posts

right

now i'm normally pretty good with the spanner but this one has me stumped i noticed on my pre-mot check that 1 of the wishbones was cream crackered so decided to replace both i ordered them from the internet and swoped them over i also replaced a rear wheel bearing and rear spring at the same time.

it went through the mot with out a problem but when you drive it the steering is so light and feels like your driving on ice and when you corner it wants to pull you into the corner and feels like your not in control.

i thought it might be the new wishbones that might not be right so i went to my local factors and gave them my reg and brought a set of fia wishbones and they made no difference i have also had the tracking done and this also made no difference .

so anyone got any ideas ?????????

i'm really scratching my head on this...

I had exactly the same prob with my cab mate, felt like i was skating on ice in corners and unpredictable steering, i had the tracking checked twice and still the same, changed the wishbones again and had tracking done again, and it was still the same, i then took it to a rallye specialist near me who did a 4 wheel geometery and alignment check and then set the tracking correctly seeing as the others failed to do the job right, and since then its been a different car that i can now trust when driving, hope this helps you, o and its been spot on now for the last 4 months,

i did have it done on a four wheel tracking system the one with the laser alignment maybe i should go back and try it again, is that the same system as you used? i have now changed the track rod ends to find it made no change but you descirbe my problem to a tee.

I was thinking i had other problems like failed dampers or track rod ends, incorrect tyre pressures etc, but it was all down to poor tracking jobs being done and one was a ford main dealer at that, the other thing i noticed when i got it back from the rally tuning chap was in a straight line the steering wheel was also straight and not off to one side like it was with the previous garages attemps to do the job, it was great to be able to have confidence in the car again, and it was all deffo down to someone knowing how to do the job properly mate.

Laser alignment isn't that accurate to be honest. I used to think it was until the garage I use to work for bought a john beam computerised system. but I'd be inclined to check you tyre pressures first off, then if that doesn't work get it re-aligned

the system I'm on about will look something like this

and you should get a print out like this

sorry for the big pics i don't know how to make them thumbnails
