Guest buster
Hi there i recently bought a xr3i 1990 1.6 I got it home and found it struggles to turn over when hot. (I now understand this seems to be a common fault)Also ramdomly cuts out sometimes on idie and runs very hot! i have taken the stat out and it ran at the right temp when i too it for a test drive I parked up and left it running and the temp gauge got high. I have tried changing the starter to cure the hot starting problem but no better! any advice to theres problems would be a great help! many thanks Buster. RobMk4TwinCarb
This problem can usually be the starter getting hot..some heatwrap around the downpipe can help that. I have had a coil overheat before and cause the same sort of thing but im guessing as yours is a '90 it will be efi and have no coil. Also make sure your fan comes on and giving the water a flush and refill could help the cooling..if it is getting really hot and losing alot of water could be your headgasket.
