Sounds like the main shaft bearings are breaking down.

Its not that difficult a job. The main things that will cause you grief are bolts that are seized and removing the gearbox once unbolted.

On a drive with axle stands your looking at around 6-7 hours with some help.

If your lucky enough to have a lift it will take around 3-4 hours.

It's a piece of piss to change, if you have abs it can be a pain in the ass but in the end its just more stuff to take off. If you take the rollbar off the gearbox will drop out on its cradle.

The shaft bearing has gone in mine and that is rattling in neutral then with the clutch in stops making a noise. It was dry and that was grindy noises followed by the odd clanking noise which went after filling it up. I did think the rattling was the thrust bearing so changed that just to put it all back together and it was the shaft bearing all along.

Whack some gear oil in it and see if it changes can't hurt if it's dry.

Ceased bolts probably will be the worst bit of it.

Took me and a mate 2 days to remove an RS2000 Engine and gearbox, and put the replacment in, the time consuming bit was connecting up all wires and cables. But with the engine out and fault finding, took about an hour to remove the gearbox, change the clutch and put the gearbox back on the engine. Probably no help to you though unless your removing the whole engine.

If your oil is low then you probably have a leak. Check both driveshaft seals. The other seal is inside on the main shaft. You'll have oil all over the clutch and oil around the bottom of the gearbox where it joins the engine. Probably best to top up and keep an eye on it

yea there should be 2 plugs on the gearbox, (if my memory servs me correctly) the one higher up for filling and the one lower don for the level,

take both of these out, start filling the top one untill it comes out of the lower one,

( there might also be a drain on there too, leave that one alone;))

Theres a hexagonal bolt on the 3i/rs gearbox facing frontwards. Undo that and fill until it starts to come out. Make sure the car is on reasonably level ground.

Undo the top plug which is an 8mm hex key(on mine anyway apparently they can be torx) fill it up until the oil is less than 10mm from the top but more than 2mm use a bit of wire bent to get a level. The plug is on the gearbox at the front the top one will be round with the allen key bit in the middle and the bottom one will have a nut shape with a long bit protruding off it.
