Guest s11pyk
Iv got an efi mk4 cabby, not in bad overall condition but a slight gearbox/clutch/selector issue is worrying me. Sometimes when im in second third or reverse the gearstick is difficult to get out of gear. I have to put the clutch pedal right to the bottom to get it in or out of gear anyway and the bites only about an inch up. when you keep in gear but let off the accelerator it makes a noise, hard to describe but its like a quiet meshing/grinding noise? if worst comes to worst what gearboxes can i use in the car? can the clutch be adjustted? and why is it sticking in gear? also its quite sloppy in gear iunderstand its 20 years old but im sure it can feel better than this

If that does not work then you need a new clutch as the it sounds like it is not engaging properly hence not able to get in or out of gear. The noise sound like it could be the release bearing, does the noise change or stop when you push the ckutch? The sloppy gears can be sorted, it's the bushes on the linkage that wear, replace then and should tighten things up.

LeeMcCarthy
I dont know what prices are like but shop around or maybe someone on here maybe able to do it cheap, Im sure the bushes can be done yourself and the cable is a nut if i can remember correctly. Guest Cabbytech
You say "is difficult to get out of gear", that could also be clutch drag, where the plates are not dis-engaging properly, this can also cause gears to grind when shifting, it is usually caused due to insufficient linkage travel, broken clutch release lever on the clutch cover, or broken gearbox mounting. With the car engine running on flat ground, press the clutch to the floor and wait about 10 seconds, then put it into reverse gear, if it does not go into reverse gear smoothly, ie clunks or grinds, then you have clutch grag. If it goes into reverse nice and smoothly, then check the gearbox mounts. Edited January 15, 2010 by Cabbytech
