IS ALSO POSTED IN ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, DIDNT SEE THIS SECTION, HAVE PM ADMIN TO LOCK & REMOVE

Hi guys, not a sparky so after help with regards to what i have inherited.

Got a K reg Mk5a cab, want to sort all the wiring out for the stereo properly, but its in a right state thanx to the previous owner. Have included pics to show the problem. Have done a table as best i can to explain, any more pics required please ask and i will do.

Oh my where do i start, as you can see from the pic below, i have a mess on my hands. Between the main grey cable and the main wires they are all connected together in one way or another (scary).

Excuse how i word this, the metal protection that surrounds the wires inside the grey cable is connected to the brown wire attached to the top connector block.

There are other bits like this that would take to much explaining, more than happy to speak over the phone if anyone has the time for a more detailed explanation.

What i hope to do if possible is - can i make a fresh start and cut just after the places indicated in the photo below.

Could someone confirm that the main grey cable (1) is for the speakers and the main wires are the power and the rest (2) and what is the third cable for (3), its not the antenna as i have removed this from the display.

Is this table correct -

Out of the grey cable

Colour wire................Role

Red/yellow.................Rear speakers positive

Red/white..................Rear speakers negative

Black/white................Front speakers negative

Yellow/black...............Front speakers positive

Green/white................?????????

Green/yellow...............?????????

Brown/yellow...............?????????

Brown/white................?????????

There is also a metallic blue sheath with a red wire inside.

Appreciate any help on this.

Thanx in advance

Ok, this is what you should have

Red..........constant 12v from fuse 21 and should be 15A

yellow.......auxiliary 12v supply via ignition switch, this comes on when your turn ignition from pos 0 to pos 1.

brown........earth

grey/yellow..goes to either fuse 6 or into the side light circuit for illuminating the stereo.

brown/white..goes to anti theft alarm system

Speakers

white/red and yellow/red.........RH front

white/black and yellow/black.....LH front

white/brown and yellow/brown.....RH rear

white/green and yellow/green.....LH rear

the metal protection you mention in the grey cable is called an overall screen and is connected to earth via the brown cable.

I hope this helps you

Thanx cabbytech for replying.

The ones below was where i was struggling, speaker wires not to bad on. Can you confirm the comments i have made at end of each wire.

Red..........Happy

yellow.......Happy

brown........(which one, in the picture are two brown, 1 thin and 1 thick. (whats the one left over for)

grey/yellow..so do i connect this to the sidelight or does the stereo have an illumination connection

brown/white..connected if the stereo has this option

Speakers

Would you reccomend a complete re-wire, happy to do this. Any ides what the red wire in the blue sheath is for inside fords initial wiring.

As for the overall screen happy with what you mean but never seen that done like that, is there another way of not making it look like someones gonna get fried.

Thanx for replying, hope you can provide a bit more

brown wire.....these should both be the negative return (earth) so you can connect to either of them, if you have a continuity tester, you could prove they are both returns, if your not sure, then just use the smaller one which looks like the original one to the stereo.

grey/yellow.....this will already be wired into your sidelight circuit, so if the stereo you are fitting does not need seperate illumination, then dont use it.

brown/white.....again if the stereo you are using does not require a connection to the vehicles alarm system, then dont use it.

With screened cables, i usually solder a small wire onto the screen and put a rubber sleeve over it to hide the screen, it just makes it look so much better.

I cant see which wire you are refering to when you mention the red one in th eblue sheath, can you put a pic up of it so i can have a better look, thanks.

I dont know what the red wire could be for, i would disconnect it and see if anything stops working, it needs identifying and doesnt look like ford wiring.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but my fella's in the exact same position as the OP and I was wondering if anyone knew what the red wire in amongst the speaker wires is for?

Thanks

Just thought I'd add, the stereo is powering up but there's no sound.
