Guest pauls0701
on way home from work with a boot full of new spares to try and sort out handling problems the temp gauge went up in to the red. was only a very short distance from home so carryed on hen i got ho,e popped the bonnet and the fan wasnt running but also very slowly removed the rad cap and nothing but a very small psst noise so dont thgink that it is over heating and its just the temp gauge reading wrong. have looked though the site and all the other posts about gauge reading wrong seem to say that the gauge is low not high. could this also be the sender unit u/s or do you think it could be something else? wkill bring my infered temp reader home from work tomorrow and take the temp of the water
Guest Cabbytech
It could deffo be the temp sensor mate, this happened on my cab recently, it went right up high a few times withina week before it packed in all together.

Guest pauls0701
ok changed the senser today and still doing it. what its doing is when starting from stone cold the gauge is reading half way then as it warms up it goes up in to the red have left it running and the fan is cutting in and out after about 20 mins stood running have taken temps from the top hose with an infered thermometer and its reading about 82 when fan cuts in so its defo not over heating so what else could the cause be???????? Guest markeyboy
check that the sender wire isnt shorting to earth, im pretty sure that the sensor allows more electricity to flow the warmer it gets (from live to ground) if its finding its own route other than through the sensor this would give a reading much higher than the actual
Guest pauls0701
i was thinking thats how it worked and thought that might be the problem, have checked the wiring that i can see and all looks ok think i will have to get hold of a wiring diagram and try putting new wire in
Guest markeyboy
have you tried disconnecting the sensor and running the car to see what the guage reads, with it disconnected the gauge should not read anything, then short it to earth (stick another wire in the end and earth that) and it should read the max temp, if this works you may have the incorrect temp sensor, if it dont its probably somthing wrong with the gauge itself, (which i dont know anything about)
Guest pauls0701
yes tryed disconecting the senser and gauge still reads half way. looks like its something im going to have to put up with, will soon know if it boils by the steam coming out the bonnet lol
