Guest ILOVEMYPINKMK4
Finally... I bought my car home, after 8 weeks in the body shop. Does the cog on my 1989 mk4 xr3i's water pump run via drivebelt or timing belt? Manual mentions drivebelt, but unsure if its referring to my particular engine. I've got the 4 bolts from old pump, but am frightened to withdraw pump, in case it is the timing belt and I mess up the timing. Timing is too technical to even think about, without getting a headache. Can anybody please suggest a site which shows you step by step how to takeout/refit the water pump. Much appreciated. Mandy the cambelt runs round the water pump, so i wouldnt take the pump off if you cant do timing, will only mess the timing it up.

Mandy Thanks for advice on timing/water pump. Got old pump out, new one in, timing belt back on. Tried several shops for new belt, but out of stock and 48 hours to order. However, wish I'd been patient and waited 48 hrs. Next morning whilst driving to work-everything died. The nice RAC man (was with me in 20 mins), said that my belt had snapped; Result=late for work + bill of £470 for garage to fix.

Guest murcus
dont be daft, you have only bent a few valves, cost you about 40 pounds for the 8, or just but a second hand head bolt it on, am sure that some one lives close enough to you to give you a hand, i would have, but im miles away, ( im 60 miles north of aberdeen in scotland) im sure we could all give you a step by step aint there a how to guide on here? the water pump would have siezed causing the belt to snap but if you took the head off your self, you could replace the valve stem seals while you were at it
