Engine Stalls At Junctions. Mk4 Cabby Efi

I know yhis has been asked befor in this forum but i wondered how bigga job it is to remove the iscv on this car 1990 i.6i efi as a mechanic im not. my car is actually going into car mechanics next tuesday as is p155ing oil from every possible place (had a shady venezuelan dodgy dealer/mechanic change the engine 4 monthes ago, as the one he sold me with the car only fired on 3 cylinders!) so now theyve got to take out the engine, gear box, steering etc to sort the gaskets out etc and theyll change me the clutch while hes at it...all good but for costing me around €700!! anyway it stalls at junctions...to change the control valve how does it come off as theres a guy on ebay selling them for 25pounds new look..

It is quite an easy job to change the idle speed control valve.

 

disconnect 1 pipe & disconnect 1 multiplug then undo 4 torx screws. Make sure the paper gasket is not split or torn. The total time should be about 15 mins & that is with a tea break/ fag break.

Hang on a sec, before bidding on that auction....

 

There are two types of ISCV valve used in production.

 

Is your Idle valve on top of the airbox cover, or attached to the inner wing around the suspension turret, or attached to the inlet manifold?

 

If your idle valve is on top of the black airbox cover, than the ebay one is OK for you. If the Idle valve is not on the airbox cover, than the ebay one will not be suitable for you.

 

The ebay one is the original 'Weber ISCV'. Ford replaced it with a hitachi (metallic longer cylinder), because of problems with the 'Weber ISCV'. Hence the different versions in use.

i was just about to post a where is my ISCV when i read your reply....

 

ive just been looking under the bonnet and the ISCV isnt on the airbox....there seems to be something similar looking near the suspension turret on the left side (as you look at the engine bay)...could this be it???

ok taken the iscv out and soaked in in petrol then gave it a good shake and rinsed it out nicely. will put it back tomorrow....haynes only talks about the valve that they mounted on the airbox which is a bit useless but 2 screws and off she comes...no gasket though is this normal??

 

anway she goes in to sort her oil leaks and clutch next tuesday so wont find out if this has remedied the stalling or not for a while.

Hello

I had exactly the same prob with stalling at junctions etc.

 

Give the bit you removed a good clean and leave to dry.

 

To clean the bit attached to the inner wing, ideally use carb cleaner and leave it a while to evaporate. This saves having to detach this part from its inner wing bracket.

 

Then simply reattach the other bit. There is no gasket between the bits held by the two screws.

 

This is how I did mine and it worked a treat.

yeah its a ppropper nightmare trying to press the accelerator and brake with the clutch depressed every time you need to stop!!! the part still joined to the car looks cacked in grime so ill try give it a spray...what do i need to buy...im in spain so first i have to try and translate whatever it is i need then need to go and try and find it!!! is carb cleaner the same as wd40 or what??? thanks for any help...glad to hear this action has remedied yours....touch wood will sort m¡ne out too!!

Hiya

 

Carb cleaner is available in aerosol cans and usually sold in motor factors/motorist centres. Unlike WD40, it evaporates after a short while. Most popular brand name selling it is WINNS.

 

The fact it evaporates, means you can spray it into the fixed part of the ISCV without having to remove it to drain out any fluid.

nice one mate...have just got back from the car shop with a carb cleaner...its not aerosol but i can stick it in a spray bottle....hope this sorts it out!! dont reckon much to these iscvs...seems to be a massive problem even though this is supposed to be a superior part to the one it replaced! cheers for the advice mate
