After all the running problems that ive had lately i finally phoned my recovery service, the bloke who turned up was from just down the road from me and so was very helpful,he checked over everything and came to the conclusion that the timing is out,he said he didnt know alot about how to fix this on a 1.8 zetec as everything is controlled electronically, and i certainly wouldnt have a clue,so, my question is what do i do next,is this something any local garage can sort out??!! The bloke said that they need a timing gun or summat?? Cheers.

a competent local garage should be able to sort it,, but probably not one of the fast fit type,, most areas usually have a manufacturers specialist ie ford/renault/peugeot. round here they charge £35+vat per hour so i would say budget for £70+vat

all the timing gun is, is a hand held strobe light,, lets em see what the timings set at while the engine is actually running.

you can not alter the timing on a zetec it is controlled by the ecu but if someone has not put cam belt on properly the timing can be out there is a mark on bottom pully and a bar to lock the cams in right position if these are correct the timing is correct (well as far as i belive).

as badger said, there is a notch on the bottem pully ( you need to take the plastic cover off to see this) which you need to line up with a mark on the sump,

if the timing is correct you should be able to slot a bar into the milled slots at the other end of the cam shaft (5 6 or 7 mm bar i cant remember)

i may have aq crude paint drawing, ill try 2 find it

its a 5mm bar that'll slot in nicely when the pully is on the marker if the timing is right.
