Guest ski1nz
Hi all have got a mk4 xr3i cabriolet that has had a 1.8 engine from the mk5 xr3i put in it. The problem is that whoever did it only changed the engine but not the wiring loom or ecu. the car runs but is pretty guttless. i have been told that if i change the ecu for a mk5 one it will run fine but i am not sure. i am debating whether to keep the engine or change it for the original mk4 xr3i 1.6 engine. I would appriciate all opinions on this thanks as i am trying to get the car ready for any sun we have this summer will post progress Best regards all ski1nz

badger
hi mate i'm running a 2.0ltr zetec with the mk4 efi loom and ecu and it pulls like a train maybe you need to check engine to make sure its ok if you need any more info let me know. i see it's the 1.8 if its the 130bhp model it should go like the clappers it might be an ecu issue or engine try swapping the ecu to start with. Guest no2lurch
sorry for the delay in replying... i originally had a mk4 xr3i with the 1600 injected cvh lump. i basically replaced the engine with a 1800 injected zetec engine out of a later escort. ii did not change neither the loom nor the ecu. all i did was to change/extend some of the sensor cables/plugs so the loom would connect up. the biggest issue i had was getting it to run right when coold and warm. the coolant sensor was the issue. with it plugged in, the car would die when cold, but run fine when warm, but with it unplugged it would idle fine when cold but not hot. what i did was take the car to be put on a gas tester. a few turns of the CO potentiometer sorted it out and it ran excelently after this when bhoth cold, warm and hot. hope that helps. Guest ski1nz
Thanks mate, that's great the engine has a K&N filter fitted which I'm not sure is affecting the running. I'm going to clean the filter and try what you said. There is also some dodgy wiring, mostly connections that I'm going to tidy up. will keep posting my progress Thanks for all the help ski1nz
Guest no2lurch
the filter, if clean, should not cause any probz. make sure everything is sound connection wise first. thats the first thing. then you can go from there. solder and heat shrik any joints. Guest ski1nz
UPDATE Hi all gave the the engine a bit of a spring clean this morning (is it spring yet?). thanks for the responce from everyone so far. after what has been said i am planing to keep this engine as long as it is sound, get it registered and m.o.t'd ready for the summer. took a few pics of the engine and bay ( click on them for a bigger pic.) P.S thanks lurch for the responce along with everyone else and finaly has anyone turbo'd one of these if so how much money and work roughley is neaded to strengthen and prepare the engine. proberly will not do it but very interested best regards ski1nz
Guest no2lurch
i think the most common turbo conversion is the 2.0 zetev conversion or the zvh turbo which is the zetec head on the cvh bottom end. there is loads of info on the net (and on this site) about conversions etc and you will get a good idea of works and costs involved with the different options. Guest no2lurch
if i'm not mistaken, the CO potentiometer i mentioned earlier is in the picture of the battery tray. it looks like its in the corner where the tray, inner wing and strut top meet.
