Guest DaveG79
Hi guys Got a major problem thats a bit on the serious side. The headlights are coming on but while driving the interior lights turn themselves off and ive just found out that when the interior goes off it knocks all the rear lights off at the same time. If it was just the interior it wouldnt bother me but with the rear lights going out its getting worrying. The odd thing is the headights stay on. Sometimes i can get the lights back on by flicking the lights on and off but other times i have to pull over turn all lights off and then back on. If anyone has any ideas give us a shout cos i dont have a clue. Thanks in advance Dave

Guest DaveG79
Do you have an alarm fitted? First check all your fuses and earthing points. As far as i know it has a factory fit. (mk 5b solar). I thought about the earth on the battery terminal but if im honest i dont know too much about the electrics of the car, plus i know the previous owner was a f**kwit who has cut into variuos wires. Are there any other earth connections to look for. Also if it was an earth wire wouldnt it effect the headlights as i would assume they share a common live and earth to the rears??? Like i say im not sure. Also i dont have a workshop manual to check it out at the moment
RScab
Most cars have two fuses one for N/S & one for O/S side lamps, the only common connection would be the earth. Or the previous owner may have connected both lights in some way (like adding an alarm). When you say the headlamps are OK, do you mean front side lights, dip beam and full beam are all OK? Do all the other rear lights work OK? Check all the bulbs are the correct type (single pole or double pole) in the correct places

As for other rear lights - Fog lights - i dont think they work as the interior switch doesnt illominate, none of the other rear lights are lit once the interior goes. Ive not had chacne to fully check it out as its been going to and from work. (fortunately ive got the weekend off this weekend so i can hopefully look a bit more) I was unsure about it being a fuse as sometime it works and sometimes it doesnt as oppeosed to always off or on. As for the previous owner im sure they messed up some of the electrics. (sometimes it cuts and if you kick the panel where the cut off switch is it will fir back upa nd it looks like a right mess inside the panel THank you for your help
RScab
If your unable to find the fault, the best option may be to replace or repair the loom back to the original spec
Guest DaveG79
If your unable to find the fault, the best option may be to replace or repair the loom back to the original spec If im honest the car will be long gone before it gets to that point. Its the wifes car and already she hates driving it and so i use it for work instead of my diesel which was bough just ot get me to work. I have my own cab that i bought not so loong ago that i want to start driving but i either need to get this running or sell it off. I dont like giving up though so i would rather figure out a couple of the problems first

Guest bertwheelz
hi, unbolt the fusebox, i bet its got wet and is corroded, this will make it short out, giving the problems you have it sounds like this is the cause, i had a mk5 rs2000 and it had just the same trouble, i got a stereo fitting shop to chop and fit as new fusebox, this cured the problem, then get the car sold, cheers, bertlo
