Hi folks,

Got a MK3 GL with 1.6 on carb. but also have a knackered MK4 1.6 inj (that's too far gone to bodily repair) so before I chop it up for bits thought I'd turn my GL into an 1.6i.

Is the GL 1.6 CVH engine (block/comp.ratio/valves etc) the same as the the injection 1.6 CVH engine.

Can I just add the tank and the injection parts to the carb'd engine and it'll all be allright are should I be changing the engine too? the carb engine has done 50K from new but the inj engine could have done 5million for all I know (hence the reluctance to change engines) are there any other bits I should be changing?

Like the idea of not having a choke anymore!!!!!!

As a side issue are the gearbox's the same too?

thanks for the help

right as far as i know the engines are the same but you will need to change the fuel system including tank, lines, pump etc etc engine loom with ecu and inlet manifold you should be able to put both cars side by side and just swop everything that ain't the same. there are many people on here that will know far more than me and i'm sure you'll get the answers you want.

If you're swapping from carb to injection you'll need to change the head too, the inlet ports are a completely different shape;

the inlets ports on the carb head are round, but the efi/injection heads are shaped like a letter P so the injector pintles can sit in them.

Grove garage and Jano Oddkidd do adaptor plates for about £80, but its FAR cheaper and easier just to stick the injection head onto the carb bottom end.

That said, it's probably best to rebuild the whole injection engine, then you know its all good before you put it in, and you wont have to monkey about with drilling the block to put a crank postion sensor hole in and changing the flywheel etc

Again, WRONG! EFi again!!!

MK3 loom is different to the MK4, dash etc, it'll fit no probs. Just try and find a MK3 XR3i loom....................rocking horse poo!

MK4 tank is slightly differant as are the fuel lines but they fit with no probs. Fuel pump fits aswell.

MK4 'box doesn't fit a MK3, so use the MK3, it'll be fine. Engine mount is different so use the MK3.

I'm assuming you are not using an EFi 1990?

If you require anymore info, just ask, i've done this conversion, MK4 into MK3, a dozen times.................or so!

Turbosy, WHERE exacty does he say that it is an MFi engine and not The later EFi? :punish:

So you might be WRONG!!!

And btw, EFi heads ARE different to MF1/Carb heads so I suggest you do your homework before putting posts up that make you look foolish.

I am assuming he's using a MFi not EFi, so yes i could be wrong!

But, YOU are assuming he's using an EFi engine not a MFi, so YOU could be wrong!

Where did i say that EFi/MFi heads were the same?? Again i was, wrongly, assuming he was using MFi, in which case, he didn't need to change it, as MFi heads are the same............the cam has a slightly different profile but it'll be ok.

Maybe i do look foolish but if he's using MFi not EFi then YOU will look foolish my friend!!

Lets wait and find out

Thought I best join in, I've been under the bonnet for too long in sh!te conditions not a happy camper. Right then to clarify I'm using my old mk3 cabby which had a carb on it, the wife could'nt get used to using a choke as it kept cutting out on her and running rough but it was fine when I was driving. Anyhoo I got the chance of a 1989 mk4 cabby using the mfi fuel injection. I thought it would be a straight forward swap. I've changed the petrol tank, fuel lines, distributor, coil, obviously changed the carb for the injection and fitted the complete wiring loom from the mk4. Next problem is the b@stard thing won't run, I've got plenty more spares now and a little more experience I know the purple fuel relays are'nt that reliable although I do have 2 good working ones. Right then the problem at the moment is when I try to start the car I turn on the ignition the fuel pump buzzes priming the system then clicks off, I turn the key further to start the car which it does but it will only run for a couple of seconds maybe four at the most then won't run grrr and I can't rev it to get it to catch as it just stops running, you can turn the engine over all day but it just won't run. I've checked all of the wires are where they should be using my brothers cabby as a guide and they're fine so I'm stumped any help greatly appreciated, are there any other relays in the system that might need changing other than the purple one??
