Guest DIBBLE
Not a problem as such but this seemed to be the most appropriate forum. I've got an 1985 xr3 Cabby and am running a fairly large sound system, i've got a big 2nd battery in the boot and a split charger but the alternator doesnt seem powerful enough to charge both. If i isolate one or the other, the alternator charges that one battery fine, when both hooked up they dont. I had the same system and set up in my last car which had a 70amp alternator and it was fine. Does anyone know what rating the standard alternator is and if theres a higher rated one on another model or later model that wil be a straight swap, same bracket, connectors, etc? i know i could get mine uprated but its usually cheaper and easier to upgrade with standard if possible. Any assistence would be appreciated.
Guest Eggsy
BUY A POWER CAP?
Guest DIBBLE
BUY A POWER CAP? It wouldnt help my system, once it had drained it would be sucking power to charge up again, and power the amp at the same time so wouldnt help the charging of the batteries, I couldnt use a power cap instead of a 2nd battery as I need two batteries for the system. escortcabrioletclub
when you say large sound system like what ? and what battery you using for your sounds ...... ? yellow or red top ? on the escort there 2 alternators are 55amp and 75amp if you want to up your power output of you alternator you wiill need to get one rewound normaly £1 a amp so 100 amps=£100 or you could just keep the engine running when playing your system hope that helps

I was thinking if something like a similar age or newer model ford diesel alternator would fit straight on it would be cheaper and easier, like the mk4 1.8 diesal? This is the system in my last car

Guest steelcabby
i swapped my shitty mk3/4 alternator for a 1.8 zetec one. fits on but needs a bracket made up to tension it. i have problems with lights and power etc, that sorted it out. don't know what amps it was. also they are more heavy duty. the cvh ones get knackered very quickly and start playing up.
