hi guys i have recently bought an xr3i cabby and have had to sort an overheating fan problem since the thermocouple was not switching it on. so i bridged the fan and the cooling now seems fine but today while driving home i stopped at the shops and noticed when i took the key out of the ignition barrel the battery warning light was still lit even with all the cars electrics switched off!!! so i started her up again and drove home but halfway there the battery light came on and when i gave the car a little rev it went off again making me think maybe the fan belt was loose and not turning the alternator correctly but then it just stayed on constantly and when i increase the revs it gets brighter!!! how very bizarre anyone got any ideas? maybe a dodgy wire on the ignition warning light? its a brand new battery in the car so im thinking if its not charging properly from the alternator will maybe take a day or so to die. but the fact that the battery light gets brighter with the revs suggests that there is some electrical power going back to the battery. the car itself still runs fine but the light is annoying me. can anyone help please? cheers rob. :help:

hi mate, your alternator is at fault the diode pack has gone reverse bias, the light is coming on to show that it is charging that is why when you rev it gets brighter with the engine revs, remove and possibly replace diode pack however, a recon exchange is easier, but make sure if u want a genuine ford one they dont try and swop it for a cheaper copy.

does this mean then that the battery is not being charged or do you mean that because the diode pack has failed the indicator light is coming on when it should not? need to know wether i have to get a new pack right away thanks.

the alternator should be still working , check it with a voltmeter engine off 12 ish volts engine on 14.1 ish, i had this happen to me and the battery was still being charged, inside the alternator is a diode pack which makes the dc output for the battery and then it gets regulated to 14.v (stops light glowing up and down and electronics works properly,) when this pack goes screwy it shows when its charging and not the other way round, it is normally easier to service exchange than repair as if the pack is going then maybe the regulator is also going so maybe a new one is a good idea. most car spares shops have a test bench to test the alternator have a ring around and ask.
