Electric Aerial (mk6)

Electric aerial has a mind of it own... does not always go down when radio is turned off/car is turned off... just worried some toe rag will snap off the aeriel if its up when parked somewhere.

i think it could be down to the connection on the rear of the radio.

Could somebody tell me what colour wires are going to the electric aerial to signal off (aerial down) and on (aerial up), and also which should be live.

Thanks for any help.

Is it the original Aeriel?

If you go in the boot the connecters behind the roof pump, tucked up were the 2 relays are. On my MK6 the wires are - Red +, Black -, Orange is Control Wire. I would assume the orange is also the same at the headunit.

if its the same as the new one i put on my cab, there's a plastic/nylon toothed line inside the metal section of the aerial. this tends to snap off at the end and hence it won't go down if its pushed up too far. depends if you can hear the motor going when you switch the car off. if you can and its not going down, there's your problem. if not, can't help you, other than to say you can pick up new aerial units on fleabay for next to nowt.

When I replaced my aeriel I put new wiring in for power, earth and ran a new wire to the headunit. However my headunit puts the aerial up whether the radio is on or not, so I connected the trigger wire to a switch under the dash, so it only goes up when I need it.

I've attached the wiring diagram for the 1996 model.

Sounds like your electric aerial needs replacing.

Its only a month old! bosch after market aeriel... but i have noticed that when it goes down, at the end it clicks loudly about 3 or 4 times?

Sound! thanks for that, i was toying with the idea of placing a switch, but i like the radio on/off operation of the aerial.

Well so far the problem is still there, thanks for the info so, far and especially the diagram!

I will have a look at the wiring again and i will connect a volt meter to see if there is power coming from the radio and report back.

Its pissing me off cause the aerial cost me €80 (£55) in my local motor factors! - I had to replace the original aerial as it was stuck half way down when i bought the car.

Hope i can solve this with yer help as it looks like this is a common fault.

What colour wire is the supply from the radio (maybe orange as stated earlier?) so i know what one to look for on the rear radio loom connector.

Thanks again... Nate.

Or is it a blue/white wire as in the diagram?

I would short out the relay as well so you know if its that, looks like its just there to stop the asriel motor going while the starter motors turning.
