  1. VIN plate last two letters before the 5 digit engine number is build month / year.

German versions were labeled as Boris Becker. With his intitials on the bootlid.

No cabrio was made in limited number, except for the all white se 1988, initially 150 units in RHD and 150 in LHD, but even that contiuned production run until June 1990, in Germany.

  2. No surprise there but the car is on ebay with a price of 9k. Not worth that or what they paid - 6k from that auction in bedford.

Not that great a car - its just a low mileage car and thats it. It has not been cherished by previous owners. Only worth 2.5k tops. And the wiring bodge in the engine bay fusebox is a classic.

  3. all cabrios have engine number on the b pillar rollbar.

two giveaways to identify an se:

    1) roof rack mounts on a pillar as two cross head blanking plugs.

    2) colour code on vin tag - SXO, as this was the only mk4 escort to have pacifica blue paint.

  4. The on at swva auction last month with 55K on the clock (interior seems to back up mileage) but needing a new gearbox went for 1.6K as a guide. On the other hand the low miles sierra cossie went for 46K at the same auction.

Even tip top cond I don't think it will command strong money as much as a RS or hatchback XR.

Only bits I don't like are:

    1) Still has old icsv valve assembly

    2) Missing oriignal spots

    3) No dealer front plate

Last two suggest some kind of front end impact. Viewing day before the auction, so I'm going to check it out properly an see what it's like.

The Derby car - Facebook site escort cabrio SE owners group, previous owner sold for 1.5K. New owner is taking the michael at 5K. I do remember that car from the mid to late 1990's though and it was not even in that special condition back then either!

  5. All good news for us mk4 owners. RS prices are silly.

But classic car prices have been rising overall, no doubt affluent investors seeking the classic car market for better returns than elsewhere (market turmoils, low interest rates). Buying now with high prices is a bit of a risk.

I'm watching an all blue coming to auction next month, 36K miles, guide price 5.5K.

Back in 2000/01, same car with same mileage would have been approx 3.5K. I have autotrader ads from that period!

  6. All cabrios were built by Karmann.

Ford eventually allowed Karmann to attach their badge to be fitted to later cabrios.

Calypso cabs would not have front fogged bumpers as standard, but they were an optional extra.

Strut brace in engine bay were standard on all cabs built from early1997.

Very unlikely there would bemany if any engine mods, as this 1.6 engine does not repsond easily to tuning for more power.

Most people drop in something like a 2.0 zetec instead.

  7. Haha, true Ian!

You'd be gald to know after a cleaning shesh yesterday, the car is now needle free :-)

You still have any MK6 parts left over?

I'm after the black plastic scuttle by base of windscreen and the interior a pillar plastic covers for both sides.

Do you happen to have these still?

  8. Loving the way the car is coming Stu. Can't wait to see it in the flesh.

Mohair roofs can be a pain with moss. But what I find is Autoglym fabric roof cleaner + stiff brush + a lot of elbow grease x 2/4 repeats gets off most of the moss.

  9. Bank holiday weekend and what better than to do some bits and bobs to my all-blue, which has been pretty neglected of late.

First job was a waterless wash using good old Megs.

Then I noticed a leak from the master cylinder.

Not too impressed that it has decided to leak fluid onto the brake servo and eat away at the paint  But never mind.

Removed the offending cylinder, luckily not too much paint stripped from the fluid, but will have to sand back and paint the servo.

Need to be careful to keep the bendix sticker intact thou.

Old master cylinder in background with new Genuine one ready to go.

Was going to bin the old, bit I have a spare non gen new cylinder and may just swap the seals across. It still looks new so why waste it,

Next on the list - clutch arm bush, which I suspect is the cause of hard to engage gears when the engine has warmed. (Old bush is broken off- and part of it is inside the 'box).

  10. Not good to hear that Stu.

I mean seriously, who would fill and paint over a threaded hole!?

When I had my bumper repainted after I scuffed it on my garage wall (Doh!), the garage did a shiote job. Even left the rubbers in place! And the paint colour was off.

Took it back and they redid it properly, much better now. Should be getting it right first time for the amounts we spend on these things.
