Hi

I am a new cab owner and have enjoyed driving it for about six weeks.

The car was originally registered 01 - 09 - 1991

Does anyone know if it should have a Catalitic Converter fitted?

my has not, but whats confusing is that it has a Lambda sensor in the down pipe.

this is not connected to anything and there does not appear to be any wiring to connect it

to.

The owners handbook shows engine spec both with and without

I am wondering if and hoping that someone has replaced the down pipe with one from a later

car. My local MOTcentre has told my that if its pre 1992 then it does not need a cat fitted.

Any advice would be appreciated

Will

From what I can gather, legislation regarding NEW EMISSION laws came into force on 01/08/1992, and stated that all cars registered

on,or after 01/01/1993 must conform to these requirements. At that time the only known way of reducing the emisions was by fitting

a CATALYTIC CONVERTER. From what I can recall most ,if not all car manufacturers were well aware of this coming legistration

a good couple of years prior to 01/01/1993, and consequently started to fit CATs on many cars by or around mid 1991. Some makers

even started to BADGE their cars :-..... 1.6lt catalytic ....or .....1.6 Cat Con etc etc. So to sum up, If your car was registered on or

after 01/01/1993 ,then it must be fitted with the appropriate Cat. With regard to your 1991 reg car then NO!! its not neccassary for it

to be fitted with a cat.....But it could be possible that like my own April 1992 built 1.8 RQB Zetec car ,a cat com could have been fitted.

So in my opinion ,you've nought to worry about......enjoy your free flowing exhaust system, and the greater power output.

Trust that the above may be of some use to you
