Guest Tony8020
Hi all, I want to add some umph to my MK4 cabby and was thinking the easiest way is exhaust, camshaft and air filter without molesting the car. Air filter is 1st. I am no mechanic but a very keen DIY enthusiast. My question is how easy it to fit a air filter upgrade myself and is the one in the link below going to be any good? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160809085419?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648 Any other advice on things I can do myself are very much welcome Thanks Tony
welshlad
i dont think that will fit at all and for starters its for a older mk2 escort etc, as for fitment if you get hold of one its basically just unbolting you old air box and tightening a large jubillee clip K & N one you need like this ebay item number 300701512927 and if your not very good at mechanics id leave the cam alone Air filter and exhaust should add maybe 7-10 BHP ish what about decent leads and plugs? and a good service, redex etc etc Tony - aka welshlad
welshlad
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K-N-57i-Induction-Kit-57-0021-1-for-Ford-Escort-/290702776639?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AEscort&hash=item43af3c593f £64 that will def fit as its been designed for the car http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-ESCORT-4-5-6-7-UNIVERSAL-PERFORMANCE-AIR-FILTER-K-N-TYPE-INDUCTION-KIT-13-/150813369035?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item231d2d62cb Looks like it will def fit and its £14 bargain might sell my old K&N and buy one lol
Guest Tony8020
Tony, thanks for that, the £14 one is too low to leave alone, may as well buy it and see if its any good for that price, bargain! it's had a recent service and new spark plugs, engine is in decent nick, loads done to it over the last year by the previous owner, I just want to pep it up without getting all boy racer about it! welshlad
zetec turbo is the way forward but its too much hassle, time and money all ive got is a straight through SS exhaust and the right back box not some big monstrouse boy racer one lol, a K & N air filter and decent plugs and leads thats about it, i dont even notice what extra gain im getting really but it sounds nice and anything is better than the standard pea shooter exhaust (Petrol wise it seems ok on long runs but doesnt like short journeys) Id like a super chip tho but they hard to find these days and yeh think i might def buy one as i think my filter has seen better days its prob been on my car since 1991 lol
Guest Tony8020
91? that's pretty good going! I'm definitely going to get one, there is a decent looking exhaust system on eBay new for around £180, I'll

I'm definitely going to get one, there is a decent looking exhaust system on eBay new for around £180, I'll probably opt for something like that camshaft wise I was definitely going to let a pro handle it! welshlad
my exhaust and filter were already on the car luckily, and ive got sections of another of my last cab £180 is cheap considering it would prob cost £100 for a full standard pea shooter one! im slating them but if i ever get a factory standard concourse cab thats how its gonna stay standard forever theres a aqua cab i want now on ebay but he wants over 3K for it
Guest Tony8020
£172 delivered, looks value http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350847782914?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 £3k is steep mate, I looked at tens of cabs before buying mine and at £900 I was pleased but it was also market price as they are rock bottom on market value now so even a minter shouldn't be much more than £2k
welshlad
i paid 400 for my rare j reg but had to swap hood seats etc over, got to admint the one on ebay is showroom condition with all history
Guest Tony8020
have you got a link? Mine is mint underneath, a few spots of rust easily sorted on the upper, interior very good condition. I replaced the rotor arm, fuel pump regulator and am having a door seal fitted to stop a leak. Otherwise its solid, not a show car but the aim is to get it to be a show type car. I want to keep it for a good few years so not worried if I spend more on it than its worth

Guest IanA
Do an oil and filter change then add some Activ8. 250ml is about £25. Half of that in the engine and half what's left into the gearbox. You'll notice the difference immediately. I wouldn't drive a Ford without it now. Feels like 5bhp at the top end and makes lower revs much smoother, less need to change down to 2nd- I find. I've heard all the arguments about "if oil companies thought it was any good" etc. It's only an expensive way of buying cutting fluid really but I find it works. Guest IanA
I wouldn't keep using it if it wasn't. I'm a satisfied customer- no connection- I pay retail price.
Guest Tony8020
I dont mind giving it a shot, it's just had a recent service so I'll get some thanks for the info lads. Guest Tony8020
she looks mint but I would be much more tempted by a 1500-2000 option as they can be found in excellent condition. mine isn't £3k away from being as mint, more like £1k, that's what you have to be thinking don't let the rarity push the price up
welshlad
good point but is hard to find decent mint condition parts these days, if only my wife would let me use my credit card id have it in my garage by now! and ive had a few people asking if i want to sell the one ive got. I can only dream at the moment unless i buy her a new shape astra sxi first then she will agree to anything lol
Guest ben smith
doesnt the air filter depend on whether its mfi or efi
welshlad
i used to think that but ive had mates of mine swap K&N induction filters over from EFI's to MFI's without a problem perhaps there a slight variation in fitment maybe ?
Guest ben smith
hmmm i thought the mfi had to keep the fuel bit on top of the air box ... but if not i might remove it and see what happens
