Guest coleser
Any ideas, trolling along around 3000revs, the car tends to stutter/ jerk as though it`s going to conk out, every now and then, but if you accelerate it clears. I think it must be a sensor somewhere but seeing theres so bloody many, which one. (97 zetec ghia mk 6 ) or of course any other ideas? Guest IanA
Did you get anywhere with this problem? My 1994 Mk5 1.8 sI has just started doing this. It mainly shows up when coming off the throttle, an extra hesitation but no misfire. Starts, runs and accelerates OK but now does 21mpg instead of 33. I've run some Redex through, cleaned the throttle body, changed the plugs and MAF so far- no difference.
Guest IanA
Sorted !!! Reading around the forum here it looked like the idle control valve was a good candidate so I removed it, cleaned it by drenching in WD40 and replaced. Now comes off throttle as cleanly as ever and idles more smoothly at sensible sub 1k as well. You'll need a Torx bit to get the throttle potentiometer off and a 7mm combination spanner for the valve itself. You'll likely mullah the gasket so have some hylomar or similar available to sparingly stick it back together. Acid test will come on the next workday- 104 mile round trip then fill up again. Guest IanA
Turns out it wasn't sorted... Commute on Monday returned 20mpg. The stuttering when cruising is a classic lambda sensor problem apparently so having overfilled with oil a few weeks back and having drained half a litre out only after a few days I decided to check the lambda. Couldn't get it out with available tools, penetrating oil and heat so reconnected it all (hold that thought) and left it. Came indoors and eBayed a 22mm combination spanner and a special lambda 1/2" drive socket. Took another car on Tuesday. Had to collect family from station on Tuesday night so took the cabrio- no symptoms. Blasted it 52 miles down the Road to Hell today and it was running fine. Came back, re-fuelled and we're back to 30mpg- its previous average. Conclusions: 1. disturbing the connection to the lambda sensor coincided with the oil change 2. overfilling the oil by half a litre or so doesn't coke the lambda 3. dis- and re-connecting all the plugs/sockets you can find might just solve your problem. Number 3 did solve a hot starting problem on my previous- an early Mk5 XR3i cabrio. Good luck.
Guest IanA
I had hoped for better than 30mpg having cleaned the idle control valve so today Thursday I did an economy commute- not taking engine over 3000rpm which is an indicated 70mph in top. Refuelled tonight and clocked 36.5 mpg. Some serious time vs cost calculations needed. The journey didn't take 20% longer.
