hi there, im new here and have recently bought myself a 1987 xr3i cabbie.

the previous owner had left it stood up for a while so its my project.

i took it for mot yesterday and it failed on cv gaitor and abs light,

sorted that out and it passed today,

nnow to my question.... i was told that there was a crunching sound coming from the passenger side and he had been told it was the wheel bearing. i hadnt heard this noise but replaced the bearing before the mot as the previous owner had said it was dangerous to drive......

so newly moted today i took the xr3i out for a drive and from the passenger side every now and then i could hear a crunching/ grinding noise and the car shook each time i wasnt sure if i was going to get home, could this be the joint in the driveshaft ggrinding against each other???

please let me know if you can help, thank you.

great, thats not what i wanted to hear lol, could it have anything to do with the fact someone told me the abs light was on because of the abs ring in the gearbox? can any one shed anymore light?

Hi, as ginger said, cv joints tend to knock in a full lock. Driveshafts will give vibration under load, very rarely do they give trouble when decellerating, but dont rule it out.

Gearbox could be on the money. check the oil level, 8 or 10 mm allenkey, if its box, you should be able to play a tune with it by playing with the throttle, the more specific the discription the better the answer.

Good luck mate.

On the MK4 ABS system, it is driven from the driveshafts not the gearbox. A common problem on this system was that abs belts would either snap or strech & then come off the driveshaft. The grinding could be 1 or 2 diff bearings collapsing in the gearbox.. Whereabouts are you Dan?

As I have got a gearbox for sale if it is needed & your not too far away
