Hi all,

having a small (wierd) problem with my cabby and hope someone can point me in the right direction.

The Car,

1992 Mk5A Xr3I Zetec 1.8 (130 bhp)

Problem :-

Some times starts 1st go

Some times takes ages to get it started. And then ----

Once started sometimes it coughs and splutters like its only running on 2 cylinders.other times it ticks-over nicely.

In ALL cases once its warmed up a bit and ticking over smoothly it will only rev to about 2.5 to 3 '000 revs (off load) and then starts coughing and spluttering, but if I take it out on the road and put it under load it will red line happily.

If I set off before its fully warm it will ocasionally stutter and give the impression its 'missing'.

After a few miles and fully warmed up it behaved perfectly goes like a rocket ship.

I have had the car for 4 years and up until 3 weeks ago it has run perfect.

Other info for the techies - Its just passed its MOT and the emissions are WAY low (that low, I questioned wether it was actually running LOL)

Has anyone had this problem or know the solution.

cheers

Dave

Hi, I had a problem something similar to yours with my wifes 96 MK5, Tried loads of things but what finally solved it was a new coil pack. The Zetecs are known to have dodgy coil packs and I should have tried this first. Anyway I got a replacement one on ebay for £32 and it sorted it out straight away. The code No on my coilpack was the same as for as a 1.25zetec fiesta and yours is probably the same.

Hope this helps

Ger

Hi mate,

Ive been having a few problems with mine lately. It's currently at the repairers.

what you've listed sounds very similar to mine. I dont want worry you but it turns out mines due to a cracked head (Cylinder 1)

When you go to start it, is it a case when you turn the key theres a clunk noise like it wont tick over similar to a flat battery? and if you hold it for a second and give a slight rev it then comes to life ?

You didn't mention it but have you had any coolant loss?

hope this helps,

Mitch.

After 4 visits to the garage and still not fixed I lost patience with it and thought I'd have a go at tracing the fault myself (couldn't be any worse than it was). On the RH side of the engine near the battery is a 5 or 6 pin multiconnector and I noticed that the plastic tab that locks the 2 halves togeather was broken. Wiggling the connector brought on all the symptoms so I just strapped the connector togeather with a cable-tie and for the 3 weeks since then it has behaved impecably including a 1000 mile + tour of scotland.
