not sure if this is the right section for this post but here goes. i have a 1993 1.8 si cabby which has developed a problem. when i brake the revs drop really quickly and the engine stalls so i have to keep braking and hitting the accelorater to keep it from stalling which is quite dangerous. im not mechanically minded but just wondered if anybody could shed some light on this problem.

Hi it sounds like the idle control valve, the same thing happened to mine, when you come to a junction and stop the revs would sometimes stall and sometimes not, does the rev counter go up and down on idle? If so this is your problem. Depending on what engine you have to the one you need. There are two different types for the 1.8 zetec. Hope this helps

Do the revs go up and down when the engine is idle when warm? Difference when cold? How did you clean the control valve? Was it caked up? As it still could be that and as cleaning won't always sort the problem. How about the throttle sensor on the throttle body? Or the maf? As for leaks there is a little pipe under the air intake pipe roughly inline with the started motor that can cause problems and crack. That can cause it to stall, failing that get it to a garage as sometimes it can be cheaper in the long run if you keep buying bits to fix it

the revs dont move from 1000 rpm when idle regardless of being warm or cold. i cleaned it with warm water and sprayed it with wd40. not sure if it will affect the mot as it doesnt happen when the car is idle.

you need to soak it in petrol or carb cleaner but even then it dosnt always fix the problem - its probably easier to just buy and fit a new one.. dont think I paid more than a tenner for a idle control vaulve of ebay and it took bout half hour to fit and my 1.8 ghia cabby has been fine ever since.
