Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my 1991 EFI, the car had been stood for at least a year and after a new battery and a little work on its brakes it went through its mot. I have used it properly for the first time yesterday as taxed it from 01/10/2011.

The problem. . . . when you accelerate it feels very very lumpy and jerky, its fine when your going at a constant speed (70mph) I dont know when it was last serviced, I havent changed oil, plugs or any filters yet.

I hoped that I could give the old girl a new lease of life without costing me a small fortune!

Any ideas please???

i cn tell you exactely whats up with her. ok when the mk5 has had a flat battery or the battery has been disconected for a while the ecu looses its memory and it has to be re taught. in other words the car actually goes into limp mode. if you have a haynes manual it explains exactely what to do in there. if you havent mail me your email address and i will scan my book and send the instructions on what to do. i had this happen at the begining of this year as the battery was disconnected over the winter and on reconnecting it it was running really rough. if you do have a haynes manual page 5A.2 section 1 will give you all the info and sequence on how to teach the ecu again. must point out tho its best to start the prcocedure by leaving the battery disconnected over night to erase any info in its memory.

Thank you for reply, she was fine on journey home from work (10 miles) park up for a couple of hours and drive maybe a mile and was jerky again (best way I can describe it is that you are trying to drive at 20mph in 5th gear and it lurches and judders) do you think this is limp mode?

Kind regards

Rob

Also it will start fine and then later when you start it sounds like battery is going flat as starter motor struggles to turn over. From your reply to other post I will look at fuse box, could this problem be related?

sounds like you have 2 problems. one is the fuse box and the other is that it needs to be re taught. i would start with re learning the ecu. and you can also look at the fuse box problem aswell they arent linked to each other, but the slow starter problem will only get worse over time, so many people condemn the battery and starter motor as they cant get to the actual problem as it isnt really visible. unless you know what your looking for. let me know if you need more help.
