Guest MJS
Help! My 96 cabriolet is suffering with a rev problem! When I start the car from cold, the car revs to about 1500 rpm, drops to 1000 then about 500 and runs lumpy all within about 10 seconds. Without touching the accelerator, the car will cut out. When the car is warm, it does not cut out, however sometimes the revs do not drop when changing gear or in neutral, they do the opposite! Sometimes at idle when warm, it can sit at about 1500 rpm. It doesn't do it all the time. I have changed the plugs and leads, replaced the idler control valve, used redex and a carb cleaner and cleaned the air mass sensor. Could it be the ECU? Thanks for looking, any help would be greatly appreciated )
Guest Lee81
More than likly a sensor giving a false reading. Possible sensor intermittant short on a sensor such as air intake temp. Either way you will need a diagnostic to check readings and see if any fault codes are present. Assume you replaced the idle control valve with a new one as a second hand one could well be faulty
Guest skelly9134
you didnt replace the idle control valve with a knackered one or one of those cheap ones off ebay did you. Also check the earthing strap that goes onto the top of the gear box. I had this same problem and checked everything including giveing the idle valve a really good clean, turned out the earth strap connection was rotten, this is the earth strap for the starter but it is also for the idle contoll valve. I cleaned it up and it was perfect. Its a long shot but it could be your problem. its located on the bolt at the top of the gear box were it joins the engine.
