Guest kencattell Posted August 22, 2011 Share Posted August 22, 2011 Hi Folks, First some background to my question. My wife drives a 1997 1600cc Automatic with a Zetec engine. It refused to start today in a local car park only firing then cutting out. After a while it started and got her the 2 miles home, phew! I went out tried it nothing, after a whileI proved no fuel being pumped. All fuses (no33, 20A) and relay (r2) ok. Emergency fuel shut off switch ok. Tap underside of fuel tank with side of hammer, brrrrp, system presurises car starts and runs ok. Sticking fuel pump, will get another and fit ASAP. OK heres the good bit. Whilst checking the emergency fuel shut off switch which is located just infront of the A pillar down in the drivers side footwell and having removed the whole triangular panel there rather than just the switch inspection panel, I noted 2 fuses and a green relay, one fuse 10A and the green relay is; judging from the handbook something to do with the folding roof, the other fuse is a 40Amp with purple and green leads on it. This fuse (40Amp) was blown, so not knowing what it does, I replaced it with one of the same rating with the intention of turning everything on until it either blew or no fault was apparent.So now to the crux of my enquiry. New fuse in engine on starts, runs sweet as a nut, fuse does not blow. Turn everything on all still ok. Turn everything off finally turning off the enging and removing the key..... the engine is still running!!! Take out still good 40Amp fuse engine stops. Repeat the process just because I dont believe it, same thing. Finally, my question. What does this 40Amp fuse do/control and if it is connected in some way to a relay is it likely the relay contacts are welded together hence the enging kept running. Leave the fuse out for tonight as everthing seems to work show wife where and how to tap the fuel tank just in case and ponder an enging that refuses to stop. Its possible that you have bought the wrong relay to replace it and its supplying current to the second stage ignition. This would be the circuit it would use to know if the engine were running. Just an idea Yes thats how it works on mine also which makes sense but the only thing I put in was a replacement fuse of 40Amp not the relay which sits in the same area. Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. However IF that relay had the contacts welded together maybe it would bring about the situation I found. Cant see how removing the fuse affects it though.
