Guest avul
hi m8 sorry no where near u but u can get a small tool that u take out the s/plugs, do 1 cylinder at a time, put the piston 2 tdc, take off the rocker, screew the tool down on2 the rocker stud & it compress's the spring so u can take out the collett's, then u undo the tool frm the stud, take it off & take of the spring 2 replace the valve stem oil seal, it does take time as u can only do 1 at a time & u dont ave 2 take off the head if u dont need 2. it will help if b4 u put on the tool 2 put a socket on the valve retaining coller & give it a fairly lyt knock so that it release's the seal that u get frm the carbon that holds the collett's in tight 2 the coller, the shock will break the seal & it will compress a lot easier. hope this help's wiv ur prob regards mark
Guest avul
hi m8 sorry no where near u but u can get a small tool that (compress's the valve spring's wiv out takin off the head): take out the s/plugs, do 1 cylinder at a time, put the piston 2 tdc (top dead centre), take off the rocker, screew the tool down on2 the rocker stud & it compress's the spring so u can take out the collett's, then u undo the tool frm the stud, take it off & take of the spring 2 replace the valve stem oil seal, it does take time as u can only do 1 at a time & u dont ave 2 take off the head if u dont need 2. it will help if b4 u put on the tool 2 put a socket on the valve retaining coller & give it a fairly lyt knock so that it release's the seal that u get frm the carbon that holds the collett's in tight 2 the coller, the shock will break the seal & it will compress a lot easier. (make sure as u do each cylinder that u turn that cylinder piston 2 tdc so that the valve doesn't drop inside the cylinder, otherwise u will ave 2 take of the head) hope this help's wiv ur prob regards mark oops made a boo boo on the 1st 1, lol
Guest Mk4 Kenilworth
I also need to replace my valve seals after overheating the engine and it sounded very tappety. Later discoverig that my rocker cover and breather holes were all blocked with thick carbon type crap. Anyway i've read you can do 2 cylinders at the same time ?? Eg cylinders 1 & 4 should be at tdc at the same time (although one will be at compression and the other at the exhaust stroke), Then you just turn the crank and do cylinders 2&3. (making sure your screw driver tops out from the sparkplug hole) Can anyone confirm this is true? Are top hat seals suitable for mk4 cabbies? Lastly will the valve defintly not drop into the piston chamber when at tdc? This is my first valve seal change and a really don't want to screw it up. ianxr3i
Top hat valve stem seals are ok for any CVH engine
Guest murcus
you can also use a bit of tow, into the cylinder, once the plug is out, just to make sure the valve stays seated, then crank to tdc then once changed rotate crank anti clockwise. worst case senario, the valve drops down, or you get hit in the face with compressed spring, if you drop the valve, then the heads gotta come off unless at tdc
Guest Mk4 Kenilworth
Cheers guys, compression tool works a treat when at TDC! Most of my oils seal were hardened and blown and will be replaced with the new ones and I haven't dropped any valves. yet. Luckily no springs/valves are broken although there are signs of heavy pitting on the cams and followers so i'll have to fit a new camshaft set over the winter. Hopefully get it fired up this weekend and having running for the Ford fair.
