Guest willow321
hi i just bought a 1.8 si cab. not in the best condition but all seems to work, however the temp gauge reads hot even when the engine is cold hopefully the wire has just earthed out somewhere, but the battery keeps going flat i had a multi meter on the battery with the engine running and it was reading about 10 volts. i know it should read about 14 volts ,is there any oter way to check it before i buy one. P.S i still love the car and have wanted one for years lol....any help would be great thanks in advance
Guest mac
had the same problem on my mk4 cabbie ,changed the alternator twice and was still putting out 10.5 i checked the voltage from the back of the alternator and got 13v found it was the wiring up to the batt was at fault changed that and havent had a problem since. but.....its abit of a dangerus job as i had the engine running while i checked the alternator i wouldent suggest doing it! think you can get them tested at a local garge or parts shop but 9 times out of 10 its the alternator thats a fault. if you get the same result when you have fitted a new alternator then try a new loom you can always take the alternator back after. hope this helps.. Guest willow321
well got new alternater, fitted it and battery still not charging so i did what mac said and checked the wires from the alternater and found out some idiot had forgotten to put the wire from the alternater to the starter motor (before i got the car i must add lol) so i connected it and all is fine, fingers crossed. now i can start to do work that i want to do and not work i need to do lol
