You cant adjust them. They have hydrolic tappets which fill up with oil. The issues you can get is the holes clog up which mean they do not get enough oil, the oil could be too thick 5w 40 is best 10w 40 at a push. Also ford cam are soft as shit and wear easy if not been looked after and some time the oil feeds in the head for the cam get clogged which mean the cam does not get enough oil. If it tappety you can do a number of things.

1 - Do an oil and filter change using decent oil.

2 - If that does not work, the next thing to do is do an engine flush then change the cam and tappets for new ones. Make sure you run the cam in correctly or you will be back at square one and make sure you use fresh oil and do an oil and filter change after a few thousand miles.

3 - if cash is tight do you can change just the tappets and do an oil change which will help but is not ideal.

Oh forgot to say when replacing the rocker arms make sure you put them on at the lowest part of the cam/lode and torque up.

thanks guys some usefull info there. i should have said the lifters are new and its only 1 that has a little tick now and again im maybe wanting perfection from it but i got some new castrol oil to go in its 10/40 so will try torquing them down again to check them. and then i will change the oil and filter also do i need to run the new lifters in as i havent really had it upto temp as the fuel is very low.

im gona strip it down and re torque them, i know the cam isnt that worn cos the old lifters were not really noise and now the engine is a lot quieter but just have a tiny little tick now so want rid of it. but do i need to run these new lifters in?

getting the efi to tick over nice is a mission in it self

right i went over and hand a fiddle with the car today changed oil and filter and ran at 2000 revs for a bit and sounded ok until it was ticking over and it started ticking again. so thought right im gona fettle you and stripped it down again and loossened all the rockers again and checked them ( i must say at this point the head is absolutely spotless with no build up of crud on it) anyway back to the lifters i retorqued them down to 20lbft and rocked them and thought i can get a little more on these and took them down to 30lbft rocked them and just a slight movement on the rockers. so refitted them and fired it up and oh my god how quiet is this cvh it is so quiet now sounds like a brand new engine and also it is ticking over so smooth, it is so quiet and smooth when the bonnet is shut you cannot hear the engine, and ive had my fair share of mk3 and mk5 cvh escorts i have never heard one this quiet. so im one happy bunny now.

Would suggest having you torque wrench checked and adjusted. They go slack meaning they don't torque up to the setting. They can go way under what it should be. It gets bad quickly if you leave it in setting without loosening it after use.

Just had a look in the book and these rocker nuts should only be at 18lbs he is lucky he did not pull the stud out of the head at what he has taken them too

in the mk5 book it actually states 20lbft and it was done very carefully and as i have had many cvh engines i know what you can take them to and it has to be done in stages. not just straight to 30lb ft and to be honest they are guidelines for you to follow in the book and also i took into consideration that 1. the torque wrench is very old and possibley stretched as they need to be calibrated every so often. 2. the cam will have a little wear on it. 3. the studs will have stretched over time aswell.

taking all this into consideration i now have the quietest cvh i have ever heard. but i must stress that i would not advise anyone to use this as instruction for there engines as i know exacetly what i am doing with my 27 years experience. and the reason for my original question was to see if anyone had actually taken a set of feeler gauges to see the clearance on theres at any point in rebuilding a cvh. but i must warn you that anyone torquing there rockers down to this weight do so entirely at there on risk.

i am now starting to wonder if the settings in the book is a little out as so many seem to rattle or tick so much.
