Guest Malcolm mcknight
has anybody rebiult a 1600 cvh engine with 1800 cvh crank and rods to make 1760 cvh. Does it work or is it just a myth. I am planning to uprate my 1991 1600 efi cario a little (decat cam freeflow filter ecu remap etc) but keep it looking completly std.
Guest s6boy1979
Changing the crank and rods alone won’t increase the engine from 1.6 to 1.8. You need to increase the capacity of the block either with an over bored or getting the American 1.9 block. If you go for the over bore be careful as if you go to big if will make the block not as strong. The 1.6 bloke will cope with a 1mm over bore but any more than that you will run the risk of the wall cracking. All you need for this is bigger piston as the standard crank and rods will be fine but if you want to go all out get the crank and robs lightened. Guest Lee81
Forget 1800 cvh as the block from the sierra is completely different. You can have 1.9 cvh like said but it won't utilise any of the 1.8 parts. It will cost £2k for an engine like this unless you find a second hand one. The best option is a 2.0 zetec. They can be had with running gear for around £150. Its not too involved to fit and companys do these conversions in around a day. For less than £1k you can have 130bhp with a fair chunk of torque. 200bhp is within easy reach with cams and throttle bodies wihich could be fitted at a later date. Guest Malcolm mcknight
I am going to be pulling the engine apart to refresh it as it is a little tired (the cam is at the end of its life), and I understand the 1800 crank has a stroke of 88mm compaired to 79.5 of the 1600. I wasnt planning to overbore the block unless there was excessive wear, and then only to the next rebore size. What I was asking is if any body has done this conversion or if it was possible. I understand that puma racing when they used to do big cvh engines used to do a 1700 as well as the 1900 conversion. It was my understanding that the 1700 was done to the std 1600 block and pistons with the 1800 sierra crank and rods fitted, but I may have been misinformed which is why i am asking on the forum. I understand that the 1900 is done to an america block with special 83mm pistons and it is an expensive conversion. I know the zeta conversion is quite simple and would give better gains, but the hassle with the insurance when trying to get insurance on highly modded cars is horrid as ive been there before, and my current insurance company is already charging me extra for the alloy wheels and the mohair roof. So i want to keep the car looking completly std, but updating it a little to get better drivability.
Guest Lee81
You can acheive 1696cc or there about by going to the third oversize. Jampsort still do a 1900 on the original block but would think that its not the stoke they change as piston valve contact would occure so must be a overbore. Its worth ringing adrain flux for some quotes on diffrent mods. I got my other cabby with alloys, brake upgrades, suspension kit, 200bhp rs turbo engine on a classic policy. £260 fully comp.
