Guest Tuft
I've had two Escorts stolen in the last six months. I got them back. They break the bottom shroud and pop off the ignition switch and use a screwdriver to turn the centre of the barrel. That's it! I found that the steering lock seems to be the same whether adjustable or not. What is different is the plastic shroud on the adjustable type column. Although the MK5 and MK5A have the same position screw holes the MK5A shroud is slightly longer towards the steering wheel and will foul the wheel if trying to fit the later shroud on an earlier car. The later shroud is identifiable by having four lower screw holes (only two are used). If I remember rightly the steering lock assembly is just held in place once the steering wheel is back on. It has a bearing in the upper end and a nylon collar that keeps it all centred.
Guest Tuft
Forgot to add that you only need to buy the lock assembly if your ignition key barrel is undamaged. I think the airbag type may be different but if yours is non airbag then an assembly off a mk5 or mk5a should fit whether it's PATS or not.
