Pulling My Hair Out...

Hi

The car is a Mk6 Ghia

I have been trying to sort out the problem with my roof for about two months now! At first the problem seemed to be in the boot. I had power at the switch, and assumed I needed a new pump motor. So today I opened the boot, got someone to press the switch and checked the plug and sure enough had 12V there... Still wasn't working though, so I checked the thermal cut out switch fuse and it was corroded, but cleaned up ok and showed no resistance. I checked all the Earths and they are fine too. The relays all seem ok, but one is corroded slightly. Tried the switch again, nothing happens still... So then I go to check for power at the switch again and there is NOTHING!

The fuse is fine. I have tried the blue wire trick, but that obviously doesn't do anything as I have no power anyway...

Does the wiring run to the back of the car before it goes to the switch, as in, could me playing about in the boot have affected the power at the switch. I really am lost for ideas and will greatly appreciate any help you can offer!

So much for a simple fix!

Oh, and you know there are three relays in the boot, two of which are part of the same harness... Well, no matter which one I put into the holder that is on it's own, that one always gets very hot - even though there's still no power!!! lol, help me!!!

And on that individual relay holder there is no terminal to accept the 87 pin... There's just no cable going to that particular terminal! Is that normal?

The roof switch on the mk6 earths out the return from the relay coils, so you will get what is known as a floating 12v live appear at the switch on 2 contacts when you test it there, this is from the relay coils due to having 12v + on them waiting to be operated, and when you press the switch one of them will disappear depending on which way the switch is pressed, this should then operate whichever relay to either open or close the roof, The main roof motor feed goes through the relays to the motor, when the switch is not operated there should be no voltage on the motor wires and what happens is when one relay operates it puts power to the motor and uses the relay that isnt operating at the earth return for the motor,

If you are still struggling with this, i will do you a wiring diagram at the weekend from my cab with the blue wire bypass to earth so that your roof can operate without the engine running, because the blue wire mod is not working on yours at the moment, that tells me the 12v + auxiliary supply to the relays is missing, you can prove that the power side is working by removing the tops off the relays and one at a time press them in so the contacts make, that should make your roof move up and down and prove the power circuit is ok. O and dont jump if the contacts spark when you frig them lol. Good luck m8.

Well... It's working now, somehow! lol... I took the covers off of the three relays in the boot, plugged them back in and thought 'I don't really fancy operating them with my bare hands...' And my little brother said I should see if it works without the covers on... And just like that - it worked!

So I don't know what was going on there... One of the relays had some verdigris on one of the pins, which I cleaned up only a little bit of, but other than that I did nothing, and it works!

Still, happy days!
