Gearbox Issues

Hi,

I have a new clutch and new gearbox oil but still I am unable to select gears sometimes and I have to be very slow and careful when changing. It seems fine when idling. Does this mean a new gearbox or could it be gearbox mounts or something like that?

Thanks

G

Well it could be misalignment of the gear linkage when the gearbox was put back in, or a poorly mounting rubber, especially if you can select the gears ok when not moving.

No. I am having awful problems with the car at the moment and I am getting really worried I won't be able to get her to the ford fair.

I believe the gear problem is the engine mounts.

Check that the nut and bolt that couples the gear selector from the gearbox and the gear linkage together are tight, i have known these be loose and cause this type of problem, you will have to get at it with your spanners and make sure it is tight because it may look and feel ok.

Thanks for your advise on my gearbox issues. I have brought an engine mount. I am thinking of changing the gearbox mount but is there 1 or 2 and would you know where to source original ones. I can only find race ones and they are expensive and I really don't need hard ones. I will be fitting a new gearbox cradle soon so I would like to replace them at the same time.

I got these and they made alot of difference, I would guess by what your saying it sounds alot like the linkage isnt right try taking it off and re-doing it with it in 4th I think for a mk4 anyway and someone inside holding it steady doesn't hurt.

Thanks Rob. Funny that. I was looking at these earlier. Are theses the correct ones for my car? Escort mk4 xr3i 88'. I believe I need 2. Correct?

I will look into the linkage. I have never done one before. I am only really a beginner but I learn fast. Is it hard to do?

Yea they were right for mine im pretty sure all cabs made after 86 had the cradle type gearbox mount..or it might of been 88 memory isnt the best, they are slightly smaller than ford one's but the extra on ford one's is loose rubber so far as I can tell.

The linkage has a 13mm nut and bolt that attaches it to the selector rod on the gearbox and a 19mm bolt on the stabiliser bar, I would loosen the 19mm and the selector rod nut put it in 4th and get the linkage on as far as poss then tighten that then the stabiliser and see how it is and if it needs adjusting then do it again.
