Heated Rear Window Not Working

Hi All,

The first of many questions no doubt....

1) I press the heated rear window button and..... it dont work! not getting any volts at the rear window but the rear view mirrors are heating up well so I guess we have power somewhere!

I really could do with a wiring diagram but I am not allowed to buy a manual so close to christmas (subtle hint I think)....

Also,

2) I have no central locking at all, lock the doors manually ok, the light under the clock is not flashing so I guess it may be a sensor in the door?

The car is a 1996 1.8i Ghia btw.

Cheers,

Spence

The heated mirrors and rear window are fed from the same violet/blue wire from the fusebox, so it sounds like the wire is broken somewhere to the rear window,

the wire may actually be coloured violet/white on the back of the switch.

The central locking is fed from fuse 30 and should be 20A.

cheers for the response.

I have fitted a fuse (fuse was missing) but still nothing, is there a relay for the locking that may be missing or damaged?

I can't find a break in the wiring for the heated rear screen yet, still looking though.

A bit of a friday car I think, I hate buying cars but this looked ok at first but on reflection it will need work.

It goes but I could make a list of faults I have found in 4 days of owning it.

What would help is knowing the features that this car should have and what trim etc...

It is a 1.8i ghia 1996 model but the interior seems to have been changed, it doesnt have the ghia walnut dash and I am sure it should have, I got in it this morning and I would say I stayed dryer on my motorbike!!!!

grrrr......

any help appreciated though, I would like to get this back to how it should be before it was butchered......

There are 2 connections to the rear window, a screwed earth connection to the bodywork on the left hand side and a spade connection on the right hand side (looking in from the boot). From memory I think they are both accessible from the rear seat if you lift the lower section, or possibly from the boot under the carpet up against the back side of the seat.

Right, pulled the seat up today and traced the wires.

The earth is fine and dandy....

The feed goes down into the rear of the boot, into a connector and then forward under the seat.

Traced it down the car to the kick panel where it splits.

Still no 12V.

There are 2 sets of wires here, one is the Orange/Yellow which goes to the back to the heated rear screen, this seems to be entering the central locking unit!

The otheres are Orange/Black and go live on the hrs switch which go up to the mirrors.

Does this sound right the hrs should feed from the central locking box?????

The central locking does not work either so maybe if I get that working then things may fall into place?

Any more clues?

Also, I fixed the radio aerial today, turned the radio on and off and everything was fine... until I found a relay position empty behind the kick panel, stuck a relay in to see what it did and the hazzards came on, swapped the relay for a NO one and they went off but when I started the car the radio aerial went up without the radio being on and broke the aerial drive (bugger)...

Any ideas why?

Cheers in advance...

Spence

The central locking and heated rear window circuits are independent from each other, if the heated mirrors are working, then the heated rear window should also work as these are fed from the same circuit, the only proviso here is that the feeds to the mirrors and rear window come from the fuse box on seperate outgoing wires, its possible that the link in the fusebox between these 2 circuits has failed, i would be tempted to reconnect the wire to the rear window as close to the one to the heated mirrors coming out of the fusebox as you can, and see if that works.

From the fusebox on my wiring diagram, i can see an orange/yellow wire that changes to orange/black to the door switches for the central locking, these wires should be live 12v, if you can get 12v here, then it could be a bad earth connection, the earth for the central locking is down near the bottom of the drivers side A pillar behind the plastic cover near the accelerator, could be worth removing the earths and giving them a good clean to eliminate them. These earths also appear to pass thru a link in the fusebox, so this could be where the fault is, if you PM me your email address, i will send you both circuit diagrams.
