Hi first post and ive got a few questions to ask.

First of all my front windows aint workin and the drivers side is down about an inch, the rears are working fine and ive checked and there seems to be 1 fuse for all four windows and its ok.So anyone got an idea of what the problem could be ?

Secondly my speedo, temp +fuel gauges(low fuel warning light still ok).Speedo just bounces between 0 and 10.

Any help/advice would be great

Oh its a 93(k) 1.6 EFI

There seems to be power going to switches and motors but they aint working.Rear cut off switch needs replaced (only works if you hold it in). Also the roof isnt working either could this all be related?

Been soaked twice today so im looking for a spark.

It sounds like the earth return has failed, see if you get continuity to earth from one of the brown wires on one of the switches that isnt working, and then see if you get a similar reading from a brown wire on one that works, if using a digital meter i would expect a reading around 0.1 ohm for a good earth and a reading around 1999 plus for an open circuit, a faulty earth will most likely be the cause of your windows and roof problem. i cant understand why your speedo bounces between 0 and 10 as this is mechnically driven thru the speedo cable.

What is the problem with the temp and fuel gauges ?

can u explain a bit more about testing the earth, ive got a digital multi meter ?

Temp and Fuel guages just sit at bottom and dont move.

Ok lets see how we go with this, first of all on the mk 5 the earth point for your front elec windows and central locking is on the drivers side A pillar, you will need to remove the kick panel next to the accelerator and locate the earth wire/s that are fastened to the pillar, if your lucky it might just be a case of cleaning these up and refitting them.

If the above are all ok, then to check earth continuity with your meter, do the following, first of all set the meter to a low resistance, then short the meter leads together and check the reading, it should be around 0.1 to 0.2 ohm, if the reading is 1999 or more then the meter or leads are malfunctioning. If all is ok, put one of the leads onto a brown wire on the electric window switch and put the other lead to a good sound earth point on the car body, if the earth is ok then you should get around 0.1/0.2 ohm reading. if the reading is high, ie 1999 or more then the earth on the switch is not working, if this is the case, then to prove the fault, put a new wire onto the brown one at the back of the switch and connect the other end of the new wire to earth, then try the window switch, i think the ignition has to be on for the windows to work, good luck.

Ok i checked the earth on a switch that aint working (meter set at 200 ohm) put to a screw in footwell and it read 17.8

On the switch thats working read 00.3

If i touch red and black probes on meter it reads 00.3 so im guessing its an earth problem, checked in footwell and they all seemed ok.

Rain went off so its the first time i havent been soaked all day

Sounds like a crap connection somewhere, now try putting a new earth wire onto the brown earth of the switch thats not working and see what happens, i reckon the window will work, if it does i would bear back a bit on the original brown wire and solder the new wire to it and make the new wire your new earth, once we have the windows sorted we will move to the next problem.

Thats weird, are you sure you have power going to the switches and motor ? because if you do then there is only the earth return left that can be giving you a problem.
