Guest EnzoCav
Hi Guys, Just bought a mk.5 xr3i cabriolet. The guy i bought it from seemed to know what he was talking about. The electric roof isn't working and he said he replaced the motor? in the boot, but that wasn't it. The thing is, the rear windows aren't working either, and he said that because they both aren't working, that means its something (relay?) down by the drivers right foot, further down than the fuse box. He said it was a cheap job, so i really want to get it done, anyone got any ideas if this is the problem and if it is where i can get one to replace it? Thanks for any replies! Enzo. Guest Cabbytech
"He seemed to know what he was talking about", just a pity he didnt know how to fix it though lol, Ok first things first, on the centre console near the handbrake there is a little button with a red window symbol on it, this stops the rear windows from working, just check that it hasnt been left in the inhibit position, also check fuse no 22 which should be 30A, before we look deeper into the rear window problem. The roof problem, right, first of all check the thermal cut out switch next to the hydraulic pump/motor, if this is ok, gently pull the roof switch out of the centre console, and check for power at the switch with the ignition switched on, let me know if you have power at the switch and what colour the wire is with the 12v on it before we go any further. Guest EnzoCav
Thanks for the help! The button is not down, that was the first thing i checked. But i have just realised that when i press the roof up/down button, the pump makes a clicking noise, So the switch has power. But none of them had 12v on them? Also, i looked all around the pump but can't find the thermal cut off switch? The pump is on the left in the boot, and via wire connects to a fan looking thing furthur up on the left which has 12v written on it. Sorry for being a complete amateur! And thanks again for the help! Enzo.
Guest Cabbytech
Hmmm, i wonder if the mechanics are jammed then, but the motor is trying to spin, you could do with someone holding the pump when you press the button to see if it actually does anything, it sounds like one of those problems that needs to be seen to be sorted out, if you are near me we could arrange to have a look at it for you. Guest EnzoCav
I got someone to hold it and it just clicks, nothing else. Is there something by the drivers footwell that would affect it, or was that the guy talking rubbish? He said there was a relay? or something (can't quite remember what he said exactly) that needs replacing? I live in Birmingham, where abouts are you? Guest Cabbytech
The fusebox is down the right hand side and that has relays on it, if it clicks i would assume the power is getting to it and therefore look for a mechanical problem, is the hydraulic fluid up to the max mark on the roof pump ? and is the manual release key tightened up, i am in Rotherham, South Yorks. chaz
it's possible that the cogs in the pump are damaged and need to be replaced, the club sells a replacement kit.
