Mk5 Escort 1.6 Efi Cvh Jerking At Low Speed

Hi I have a 1990 Mk5 escort cabriolet 1.6 efi cvh jerking at low speed, it seems to miss and then pick up again, I have replaced the ISCV and throttle sensor ( the black thing near throttle body ) which has made it a bit better, also done the plugs and leads. You could be doing 30 mph in 4th gear and then it misses and picks up again very annoying, it runs well at high speeds and will go all day without missing a beat. Its done 100k miles and doesnt use oil or water. Today I took the plug of the throttle sensor ( new ) and it didnt make any different when revved up, so maybe its that ? Any other ideas chaps ?post-9652-12553707897981_thumb.jpg

is the coil pack cracked?? only has to be small for them to break.

hope you get it sorted, i have the same problem on my mk4 efi, and like you changed tps, leads, iscv and air temp sensor(plugs next)

could be emissions fault, fuel pump/relay fault, keep us updated

Hi thanks for your advice, about 2 months ago I took it to a garage ( after changing the iscv which made a little better ) The mechanic checked it over with a mutimeter and said the throttle control sensor was faulty, these are not available from Ford anymore so ordered a pattern part. The car was then 95 % better until now when its started to happen again. So last weekend I took of the throttle sensor and sprayed that and the throttle body with WD40 its now a lot better so deffo that is causing the problem. Need to find a good second hand Ford one Ford part number 91XF 9B989 AA, Ford Finis 6539215.

Cheers Steve

thanks, but mines still struggling, did yours do it all the time?? mines ok when cold, but stutters & hesitates when warm. so i'm thinking emissions or coolant temp sensor

Mine was the opposite it was okwhen cold probably cos the choke compenstated. It seems a lot better now spraying the Throttle sensor with wd40 inside. But still would like to find a good 2nd hand one, that one on e bay is a bit pricey

changed coolant temp sensor, still the same. so had the emissions checked, running on near enough air only, so richened it up, and its still happening

going to try the ecu reset see if that helps.

Hmm how do you reset the ECU ?

And good luck in finding the problem

unplug ecu or disconnect battery (easier access) leave off for a few minutes (i'm going for 30mins) then its something like let the car idle for a few minutes, then take it for a drive using different throttle positions and speeds to relearn its values.

Especially elderly Fords !

Expensive trial and error process, cant you get a mobile tuner to find out the prob ?

tried ringing one, but doesn't have any equipment for older cars, great, especially when the list is getting bigger, so add map sensor to the list.

any luck with yours?

map sensor is on the bulk head, on 2 screws on the plastic heater thing, its a black rectangle with 2 screws either side of it.

yeh pretty much trial and error, spent just over £100 on bits that didn't need doing, turned out to be the map sensor which i had in my shed for about a year.

hope this helps,

steve

Ok ta thanks, do you have a spare one I could try ? Also any idea where the IAT sensor is, I know it should be on the air intake before the throttle body and MAF but cant see anything

Cheers Steve

its on the inlet manifold. if you look at the engine head on from the front, its screwed in on the right hand side with a multi plug connected.

I dont have a spare one i'm afraid, but have a look on ebay for ones being broken, you could buy from ford, but they cost £210+vat
