Hi guys, i've got a mk 4 xr3i. I've just replaced the clutch on it and the rachet and pawl on the pedal and now i can't get the clutch to clear. with the new clutch and old ratchet and pawl the car would go into gear but crunched on reverse, 3rd and 4th. since replacing the ratchet non work. has anyone any suggestions as to what could be the problem? thanks

Hmmm, this could be difficult to sort without actually seeing the problem. is the pawl adjusting up at all, when you first connect it all up and press the pedal, you should be able to hear the ratchet taking up the slack, also on some gearboxes the exit shaft from the gearbox to the clutch lever is splined, if yours is you could prob slacken it off and adjust the clutch there, some are welded and cannot be adjusted from there though.

you can hear the ratchet clicking and adjusting up, if you push the arm in on the gearbox and push down on the pedal it will adjust up even more but as soon as you let off the ratchet will click again. should the ratchet be able to adjust both ways or only tighten?

It should only tighten up, make sure its all been put together correctly, it should not adjust back down, that sounds like the ratchet or pawls are worn out, or something has been fitted the wrong way round.

Is the pawl tension spring pressing it down onto the ratchet ? and is the clutch cable locating onto the ratchet correctly. does yours also have a seperate tension spring on the ratchet that clips into the pedal ?

Its like i said at the beginning, its difficult to assess without seeing it,

the pawl tensioning spring is against the pawl then hooks round the edges of the pedal, the cable is in the right position and there is a seperate tension spring for the ratchet but it is located correctly, i've really run out of ideas as to what could be up with it

Just double check once again that the pawl is actually the right way round, and if it is make sure the ratchet is, other than that, can you manage to get a photo of it and post it on here for us to look at ?

i can try and get a pic, i'm 100% certain that the ratchet and pawl are on the right way round as its identical to the haynes as i said and could really function atall the wrong way

sounds like a wrongly fitted ratchet to me mate. did you miss out any spacers or bushes on fitting? also i have never done this. but i spos if the adjuster was the wrong way round it would cause it to unadjust as i think the plastics adjuster has sloped teeth if i remember rightly.

so thats why the rachet isn't adjusting then......would be better to go into a scrapper to get them off another mk4 escort chap. or get a full new set from ford. not sure what the code for them is. must be cheap tho
