Mk5 Rear Seat Removal Problems & Speedo Update

Hi all, me again...

Seats

I've managed to remove the front seats of the MK5 and sucessfully replaced them with the leather ones, I've also managed to replace the seat squab for the rear seat. But now I'm stuck....

I pulled the rear seat release in the boot to drop the seat back, but nothing happened......I can see the spring on the catch move but the seat back remains solid. I'm not sure what is supposed to happen or how so cannot be sure that what is happening is correct, hope that makes sense. Can anyone help advise how I can get round this?

Speedo

The next thing I want to attack is the speedo. I have just bought a second-hand set of dials with Lookwood dials, there are white and I think would look really nice in the car, especially with an LED light upgrade I'm planning. The problem is that the car is low mileage for the year, 92 with only 83K, and its genuine and verifiable. The new dials have 17K on them which gives me a problem.

From what I see I have two options;

1. Increase the miles on the replacement speedo, anyone know how I can do this?

2. Move the white Lockwood dial covers to my existing speedo. To do this I need to remove the needles on the gauges, again anyone know how I can do this. The Lockwood set also has white needles which I want to use in the car.

Any advice on what to do would be really appreciated.

More questions to come I'm sure......

David

as for the speedo, get yourself a drill and somthing that will fit where the cable goes and get spinning lol

try getting somone to pull the rear seat drop while you tug on the seats, are you trying to drop the whole rear panel, on the mk6 only part the seat drops down leaving about 1/3 still there, it may be the same on the mk5

on the mk5 on our kids drive only the inner section of the rear seat drops down leaving the top edge of the seat still in place ... if you cant get it to drop down you might be able to remove the star screws from the bottom of the seat i had to do that to get into the boot as the lock was not working properly

dont know if any will work for you but got to be worth a try ...

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally found a solution to the seat problem and thought I'd post the result here in case anyone else ever has a similar challenge.

Turns out that it was frozen shut through lack of use, when pulling the know in the boot everything moved but the latch itself.

Took the advice given and removed the headrest section of the rear seat, which enabled me to see the problem, and work out the solution.

As I was working on my own I needed a way of being in the boot and the back of the car at the same time! Imposible, so what could be done...the answer was a clothes peg.

Pull the know and put a clothes peg on it to hold it out. The having removed the head rest I put a length of 6x3 timber bwteen the rear bulkhead and the seat and levered, and after applying some pressure the catch finally released, without any damage at all..........................

Now just the speedo problem to resolve...
