Guest RyAn1988
hi ppl in desperate need of sum advice. took the cabby for a spin yesterday and started her up n everything was fine ticking over luvly. 2 mile down the road doin a steady 40 n the oil filler cap popped off when i bought the car i noticed that there wasn,t a cap on it so im assuming that the problem was there before. bought a new 1 put it on and it fit nice n tightly. the cars done 136k so im hoping that nothings goin on it.ive been told to check the vacum pipes which im goin to check today but not sure never worked on a engine like this before so im clueless also when im doin a steady speed the revs seem to drop up and down even though my foot is in the same place on the accelerator. any advice would be much appreciated cheers. Guest markeyboy
its probably worth checking the breathers are clear, failing that it may be signs of the headgasket giving up
Guest murcus
sometimes when the bottom end is going, you get pressure at the top, but you would hear it if it were that, possibly breather blockage or headgasket, or the seal that goes around the cap is missing, making it not a tight fit
Guest murcus
If it was the gasket going you would smell petrol in the header tank, the thing is its not a new engine and its prob just needing a good run, when was the last time the engine was unleashed ? I don't mean to knock the hell out of it, but a good run does them the would of good and opens up the valves properly, alot of people just boot them 1st 2nd and 3rd, a good blast on one of these 8 Valvers does them the world of good, I'm not condoming breaking the speedlimit, but use a runway etc. Most cars that never go above 80mph when you buy them ther run like a bag of poo and are always coked up, the only thing the engine would prob need in future is valve stem seals, rings and bolts, apart from that they are bullet proof. Escort Cabriolet Club
I would not recomend 'Giving it a good blast on a runway', I think you should take it to a reputalble Garage and tell them the problem, the engine might just need a good service and flush, giving it a 'Blast' might make it worse !!! Guest murcus
I would not recomend 'Giving it a good blast on a runway', I think you should take it to a reputalble Garage and tell them the problem, the engine might just need a good service and flush, giving it a 'Blast' might make it worse !!! lol, if it were turbo'd i would be mre concerned, but with n/a how much engines do you know of that pop due to running lean or over fueling? if its a breather pipe, it will smoke like its got ring problems as all the oil bungs up the hoses and causes it to smoke, normally when the gasket is on its way out, the car feels a bit more responsive, untill it goes if it were a breather pipe problem or a bottom end, it would be throwing the dipstick out, most cvh engines, the oil cap is so slack that they rattle off, and most of them have a bit of back pressure in them is this cabby efi or mfi? Guest RyAn1988
cheers for the help its a efi engine and its not smoking the filler cap i put on it was tight so it must of been a lot of pressure to pop it off.the dipstick stays were it shud and cant smell any petrol by the header im gonna av a good look at it today c wats goin on under there. :convertible_mazeguy:
Guest Lee81
Check the breather pipes as explained before. There probably not blocked. The most likly cause is piston blow by. The first and second rings have worn and when ignited the pressure in the chamber is not contained and it is going past rings into the crankcase causing the crank case to pressurise and blow the oil filler cap off. Next in line will be the oil control rings which will then lead to oil being burnt. Also other seals around crank, cams etc will start to leak oil if not already. Had this problem myself as a result of detonation which wiped the rings out. A pressure check will comfirm this. Only real solution is a rebuild or replacement engine in this case
