Guest IanA
The water pump was leaking on my late Mk5 sI so I decided to change the cam belt as well as I didn't know its history. Changed the pump OK and swapped the idler pulleys over and they seemed OK. About a month later I started the engine up to come home from work and got a grinding, screeching noise. I knew that an idler bearing had "gone" but when I took off the lower cover, all of the ball bearings fell out !!! As the man said, when you check the idlers, think what they'll be like after another 40k. Moral- don't bother changing a cambelt on its own. Get a kit with idlers and tensioner as well. Cheers Ian
