Guest Orais
Hey ppl, Right where to start i have replaced the ISCV and MAP senor which i brought from ady! and very greatful!! but my problem still there! i get erratic idle and it is hard to start the car have to prime it like 4-5 times before she will start! I have change plugs leads and coil pack! Cleaned up crank sensor and TPS! still no change! It sounds really rough and backfires when i try to put accleration down! get very little speed and also i have to feather the throttle to get the thing moving as if i am heavy footed it hates it soon as its out of gear and in nuetral i can rev it more but still rough and backfires! sounds like timin or misfiring or joint! Anyone able to give a discription on how to check timing etc would be greatly welcomed as all ideas!! will to try anything as the misses wants it gone asap if it aint working
RobMk4TwinCarb
Take your timing belt upper cover off, get a 19mm spanner on the crank bolt and turn it to TDC (a notch on the pulley should line up with the largest notch on the lower cover) then see if the the pointy bit lines up with the mark on the head(if it's facing down turn the crank round again). If it's right the mark on the pulley will be at TDC as will the mark on the cam sprocket. The EFI has no ignition timing you can adjust really, all done by the ECU and sensors, you can adjust the mixture but you would need an emissions probe sensor thingy to get it right. Mine ran like your describing after the timing slipped out and bent the valve's(not saying that's your problem!). Sorry if you knew all this already! Guest Orais
hmm so any other suggestions!! if i cant alter timing? should i strip head and check valves? or is there something else i should look at before?
Guest murcus
i would check the pump, to make sure its working properly, and change the fuel filter while i was at it, then possibly clean the afm being the efi, i would clean the injectors , or put in some hotshots, thats what i normally use, it says to use it in a full tank of petrol, with 1/2 litre of the stuff, but i normally just put in around £10 of petrol and the whole bottle, that seems to do the trick also check the vacume pipes on the back of the inlet for splits or if any are off, as this would also cause poor running
RobMk4TwinCarb
hmm so any other suggestions!! if i cant alter timing? should i strip head and check valves? or is there something else i should look at before? Have you checked all the plugs ?(had another one run a bit like this after a plug broke) Did you check that the timing was OK ? Have you done a compression test just to see if that's all OK ? As far as stripping the head down goes unless you know the timing has been out, or you have heard contact between the valve's and piston's I wouldn't bother. Unless you don't mind doing it all for nothing other than a de-coke.
Guest suffolk04
isn't there a procedure on the efi's where the ecu relearn's its valves i.e ?? sure i read somewhere that if you dont do this, could cause irratic idling or poor peformance
Guest macabrio
isn't there a procedure on the efi's where the ecu relearn's its valves i.e ?? sure i read somewhere that if you dont do this, could cause irratic idling or poor peformance I think you mean "relearns its valUes" lol Its says if you disconnect the battery the ECU will have to relearn stuff and it says you need to drive the car 10 miles and it may run a bit eratically ? Anyone tell me what thier car runs like after doing this as AFAIK when ive done this disconnect the battery before the cars been no different (on other cars ive had) ? RobMk4TwinCarb
It says in the Haynes manual to run it at 11 or 1200 for something like 3 mins then at 1500 I think for another 3 mins, then 15 mins of "town" driving and it should sort itself out, if that's a reason why. I'll check in a bit to see what it exactly is, that was just from memory. I have re-connected the battery on mine done the "proper" procedure and it hasn't made a difference from when iv'e just hooked it up and drove. Make of that what you will. Exactly my findings aswell with other cars and my friends Mondeo when he disconnected his battery ! I think they mean performance might not be upto spec for qtr mile drags etc ! but really town driving you'll never notice however maybe i may have to give it a run/drive with some new plugs after fitting another TPS and see how it goes because like you said it may be something like the plugs are sooty or breaking down ,cant rule that out. Guest murcus
have you checked for air leeks? also check: engine coolant sensor (ECT) sensor fuel pressure regulator ( could be blocked etc ) injectors, might not be spraying clean enough mass airflow sensor (MAF ) sensor engine control module (ecm )
