Guest nick
had problem when trying to start the car sometimes it would turn over sometimes i would have to keep key turned for a while,it would bump fine and when i put jump leads on started str8 away. replaced battery and starter motor this week and still wouldn't start put that down to fact battery could have drained a little while on shelf, so i put booster pack on and it fired up first click was running for about an hour then when i turned it off it wouldnt start still and now it wont even start with booster pack/jumper cables although it will still bump ready for scrapping it now as its getting extremely annoying anyone got any ideas??? BTW its a 1994 1.6 16v zetec cabriolet
Guest murcus
could it be the alternator is knackered, and even with a new battery, if its running an engine for an hour on its own, then thats all it will last untill it stops, then that could explaine why it starts with a bump? Guest macabrio
Agreed , had similar prob on my MR2, Alternator draining battery after few hours. Have you checked if theres 14v at battery when engine running ? New Reg pack inside Alternator cured mine, BTW other symptoms on my MR2 were no battery light on on dash when switched to run position (ie engine not running). Dont just go buy a new Alt as they can be repaired by yourself ,not hard ,usual probs/wear are Regulator tits up, Diode pack or worn brushes, the Regulator pack and brushes can be sourced seperately. Have you shorted the battery/jump leads or other big sparks/shorts at any point ? or done any welding with battery connected as this can pop Regs and Diodes ? Guest nick
charges at just short of 14v once car is running it will run all day long it will jump off booster pack when its cold but when its warm it will not jump but it will bump
Guest murcus
sounds like something basic, i though possibly the cold start sensor, but dont think this has any part in the problem or could be the leeds are worn ( bettery ones ) and heating up, caused by bad earth but nope ......... i still think its down to the alternator or an earth either from there or starter as you said it goes with a bump, so its not the cars earth or, it wouldnt fire at all is the earth on the starter ok? but to run with a bump narrows it down, to the battery not holding a charge, or relay, or solenoid Edited July 17, 2009 by murcus
Guest tacha_maree
do u have an aftermarket alarm or large sound system.... as said above it could be the alternator do a volt drop test that may help you abit... if its not the alternator it may be that a source is draining your battery. Guest nick
tested battery before tried starting it was 12.23v but wouldnt start so put jump leads on and voltage read 14.47v and the car started straight away i then tested the voltage with the engine running and it was 14.18v i then tested battery using this device and this is the reading i got smack bang in middle of green ok bar then moved the switch to load on and got this reading dont have full instructions for this device so not sure exactly what this means BTW no aftermarket alarm or sound system and now the engine is warm it wont even go with jump leads even though reading is 12.34v on battery and jump voltage is 14.4 Edited July 17, 2009 by nick
Guest macabrio
Ignition Switch ? otherwise i'm a bit stumped sounds like a drain when cars running ,you can check for a drain somehow but not sure how when cars running . Have you tried pulling fuses to see if it makes any difference ,think thats how u check for drains by pulling fuses and watching multimeter when connected to battery or something like that.
