Hi guys, i have finally started on my car after looking at it in the garage for the past 7 years!. I have a mk3 A plate cab. I have put a turbo engine and box in from a mk4. I have put the mk4 gearbox mounting and cradle on. The problem i have is the engine is sitting on the slant. I would say it is low on the engine side. The mk4 engine mount is slightly different but doent seem to fit right. Do i have to modify the engine mount?? Has anyone had this problem or could give me any advise. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Carl.

I will upload some pics asap.

What engine mount you using? You need the Mk3 engine mount for the drivers side. You will also need a Mk3 gearbox aor a MK5 gearbox as these do not rely on the Mk4 craddle

Hi Paul, i havnt got anything on there at the minute. With the mk3 mount the engine sits low. The mk4 mount will not fit as it has an extra piece on the end where is fixes inside the wheel arch. The mk4 cradle is already fitted, its bolts up to existing holes at the back at lines up with one hole on the front cross member. I have drilled an extra hole and bolted the cradle up at the front. I also had to adapt the mk3 anti roll bar mount as it clashed with the cradle. I have heard of people doing it this way before. I am wondering if the gearbox is sitting too high rather than the engine side low??? Not sure what to do now! I have a mk4 cab which i am breaking up, as far as i am aware the shells are pretty much the same, the mk4 gearbox went in easily and looks to be sitting in the correct place judging by the other one. Carl.

What Paul has said is right, you need to stick to a mk3 gearbox or mk5 diesel box - I have this conversion in my car & used the mk5 box & MK3 engine mount as the mk3-4 mounts are different, we had this problem when fitting my engine!

As it happens I do have a complete MK3 RST anti roll bar for sale but you'll need the gearbox mount for it as they use the anti-roll bar instead of a cradle.

hi mate, from what you are saying am i right in thinking the mk4 box is sitting too high being on the cradle? I wanted to use this box as it is an lsd. If there is no way of using this box then i will have to change it! I am thinking maybe i could get the engine mount modified? I still have all the original mk3 mounts, i assume they are the same as the rst?. What is the gearing like with the diesel box on yours? How much you want for the roll bar? cheers carl.

yes the mk4 cradle sits higher than the mk3 mounts on the roll-bar or vice versa can't remeber to be honest! lol

I would be looking for £120 for the roll bar - but the price does reflect the condition - it also has new clamps on it from auto-specialists

Ok mate cheers for that. Gonna have a think on which way to go next. I will keep that roll bar in mind. Your mk3 looks sweet by the way , alot of hard graft gone into that one! well worth it now tho. Cheers carl.
