Hi everyone,

I have managed to get my mk5a project cabby to the pre mot stage after quite a bit of work and money, new exhaust, new roof, cv boots, painting etc it has been a mini restoration and I want it back on the road.

When I took it for the exhaust to be fitted it was a hot day today but I could smell fuel!!! the smell was coming from the petrol cap!! I removed the cap and a gust of pressure came out. Surely this isnt normal but what is the problem? The car seems to lack power also Ie it wouldnt spin its wheels if you tried and seems worse when it is at full operating temperature. I know lack of back pressure from the exhaust will not have helped but I am hoping I dont have to spend loads more money on her, can anyone shed any light on my probs?? Ogg

hi mate i cant see the petrol cap being your problem my mk5b does the same thing when i take it out and mine runs perfectly im not 100% with cvh engines but i would be looking at your fuel lines for a start mate the mk5a is well known to eat its back box someone else had a similar prob recently and once replaced power was restored so consider replacing the box firstly and see if there is improvement its usually something simple mate

good luck !!! and let us know how you get on ?

hi mate

not 100% sure but sounds like you have a blocked breather pipe friend of mine had the same problem coused a burst of air to shoot out every time he opend his fuel cap ,theres a small pipe that runs along the fuel filler pipe check that out .
