Hello,

New to the forum. Just purchased an N reg, cab si and I have a problem with the temp gauge. It will not lift past the black at the bottom of the gauge. The heaters work fine and there is no sign of the coolant bubbling or "mayo". Not sure if the fan is kicking in or not. Any clues? I am told it may be the sensor so next question is "Has anyone got any photos or a very good description as to where this is?"

Many thanks

The temp guage sensor is located in the bottom of the thermostat housing ( this is underneath the coil pack )

To buy brand new it should cost in the region of about £5 - £8

sorry but no photos of location, I'll try an get some pictures for you by wednesday ( working until then ) unless someone else can find some in the meantime.

Si.

Found the thermostat area. On the top of the housing is a sensor with two wires sticking out. Is this the thermostat sensor? I jiggled the wires and the gauge rose slightly more than usual. If i is, how do you take it out? Pull or unscrew?

Additionally if the temp guage is not working properly will this affect the idle? I thought I read this on an earlier posting.

the sensor for your temp gauge is below the thermostat housing. my gauge only moves when car stood and lots of reving fan kicks in between n and o, when driving gauge hardly moves

the sensor is the copper coloured one in the centre of this pic, between the 2 silver pipes. When it's taken out you will lose a fair bit of water, so will need to top the tank up afterwards. You disconnect the black plastic clip on plug, then unscrew the sensor. A bit of a fiddly job but not too difficult. When i changed mine I connected the black plug to the new sensor and dipped it in a cup of hot water, and turn the key (not start the engine, just turn the battery light on). The temp gauge should then go up. If this happens you know it works and can refit and top up the water.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

What is the one on top then?

Also the car is idling badly. The exhaust is making a "phut phut" sound! It is almost hunting for the idle.

Any ideas?
