hi all, i recently bought my mk5 xr3i cabby for quite a good price from 'the bay',the bloke who sold it to me said that it was all good apart from needing a good servie and tune up as oil had made its way into the spark plug wells when the rocker cover gasket went,so i handed over my cash and drove it home(chugging,no power and spluttering),since then i have given it a service, new plugs leads filter etc and some fuel system treatment and replaced the rocker cover gasket to the correct torque setting,it was still running crap after i had done this so i replaced the whole exhaust system as it was full of holes and was obviously knackered, still the same and im out of money,so,what i wanted to know is what my next move should be and does anyone have any ideas of the problem??thanks for any help!!

Hey people,i had the car compression checked by someone i know and apparently all is fine, cant remember the exact readings but it was something like 145 in each cylinder(is that right?),so i thought i should try another post and see what other ideas you guys come up with. Right, ive put a new battery on the car and when starting from cold it still seems slow to turn over but once going has a very erratic idle(not hunting) - just trying to die, then when you press the accelerator its like nothing happens, you have to keep pressing it to build the revs up,after that its fine, however, when you try to drive the vehicle its like the revs just die again and there is no power,no acceleration at all it just pootles along at tickover speed?! Any ideas welcome, cheers.

Oh yeah, that butterfly thing in the throttle body-thats meant to spin isnt it??It seemed really stiff??!!

Just noticed,it looks like im missing a breather pipe of some sort, theres a circle on the side of the airbox that looks like it should have a pipe coming from it,could this be causing my problems???cheers.

Today i checked all the breather pipes etc and all is fine, the one that i thought was missing turned out to be the inlet pipe anyway,so rules that out,i also took off that thing (jiggle valve?) - next to the throttle body and that looked and sounded healthy when shaken,i also gave the throttle body a good clean.

Anyway, the car seems to start up and tick over lovely now, however, when you press the accelerator pedal it still has no power and tries to stall until above 2000rpm when it seems okay!! It is drivable but still lacking power (the power seems to kick in for a second or two as you drive??!!) Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated! Cheers.

This may sound really silly but my bfriend had the same problem, he spent loads trying to fix it himself b4 he found out the battery was so dead the altinator couldn't provide enuff power to run car properly or sumthing, dunno just thought it may help because he went to the hassle of refitting his inlet manifold and everything trying to find the problem.

May help prob not though,

Mel.
